Christmas Poll: Christmas tree timing

Does that prompt you to put up your tree? I want to know what Houzzers think about Christmas tree timing - is there a time that it's way too early? Do you have a specific traditional date you always do it? Do you keep it up all year long to avoid the hassle?

Our youngest son's birthday is on the 14th December so we've always waited until after his birthday so he doesn't feel it has been highjacked by Christmas! He is now 27 & last year I put it up earlier & he got offended that I'd broken with tradition!!

My wife puts our tree up when all the shops do, so usually October / November. Far too early for me, 1st December is my ideal time, but I don't have any say in the matter.

We put ours up in mid November, as it seems to go to quickly if its only for December!

I like a very full, ornate tree, with plenty of sparkle. I have large bows and a train that runs through the top of he tree, with puffing smoke and a bright lint and whistle. I like the tree to take on the whole meaning of Christmas and I overload it with memories and moments of Christmases past. I also have Christmas elves in mine. They are about knee high and are dressed in rich burgundy and green traditional costumes, with lots of gold embelishmens. They have porcelain faces and there are enough climbing amongst on perched on branches to look real for my daughters amazement! They add to the whimsical and imagination of little ones.

@kirstieparker, Since our parents are now gone, mum just back in October, our family is a bit fractured because we simply came back to the family home for Christmas. Distance is also a bit of an issue with where our family members live so we personally, hubby and I will be celebrating Christmas by ourselves but we will have Christmas Eve with my son and the day after boxing day, the entire family including my son again, are meeting at a central loction, shared travel so to speak, where we try to make it easier on one family member not having to travel far and then it's swapped the next year. We're meeting at a nice Tavern, where no one is cooking and there are no presents just great times with everyone doing what our family like doing best and that's first and foremost being together, then followed closely by eating, joking, more eating and joking and so on!!! So in answer to the forum question, it's neither day really but whatever that day is that we all get together, is the best perfect day!!! Cheers, Barbara

If you are thinking about regifting this holiday season, ask yourself the following questions: Is the gift regiftable? Never regift handmade or one-of-a-kind items. I grew up in the north of Scotland a long, long time ago. Back then, everyone I knew put their tree up on Christmas Eve and took it down on the 6th of January. These days I put it up a week before Christmas and take it down with great glee on Boxing Day.

Mum always put up the tree at the beginning of Advent (four weeks prior); I preferred St. Nicholas' Day (December 6). With the stores stoking the Christmas Spirit earlier and earlier these days, I've hijacked the "12 days" idea, beginning 12 days prior (and taking it down as always, on 12th Night).

A week before Xmas, I think I am in denial that its Xmas already and refuse to believe another year has flown by. I keep it up until New Year.

Christmas Eve is when you should put your tree up and take it down on 6 January. That is when Christmas is!

I agree with the others who put theirs up in mid-November! December races by so fast it is not enough time to soak up the sparkle and enjoy the Christmas ambience of having the tree decorated and lit up in your home. Can we have a poll on how many Christmas trees people have? I'm wondering if the Martha Stewart approach of differently decorated trees for different rooms is catching on??

Early December or whenever time allows. Putting it up on xmas eve - i'd be thinking what's the point!? I need that piney smell hanging around for weeks to feel the cost was worth it!

My youngest son's birthday is the 19th December and I made his first birthday party into a Nativity Play! Figured it was the only year he'd agree to being the baby Jesus. My daughter's birthday is late November and she's told me she doesn't mind the tree going up around then, which is great, because I am putting everything up THIS WEEKEND and NO ONE can stop me!!! :-)

We are putting up our Christmas tree this weekend so as to get a photograph of the grand-kids in front of it for the chrissy cards. My wife has become a Christmas tree 'Nazi' - everything has to be perfect. Myer are sending their shop window designers around so they can see how it is done. Will post a photo next week.

The earliest it goes up here is St. Nicholas Day - the sixth of December and it always gets taken down Twelfth Night - the sixth of January. However, depending on circumstances our decorations have sometimes gone up a bit later than the sixth of December -- but never any earlier!

Petal and I don't bother. Christmas is at Mum and Dads', so to us it makes sense not to have our own. Also, we live in a tiny granny flat so there's not actually any spare corner to erect a christmas tree. Our nod to Christmas is a string of tinsel with baubles hanging off it strung across the kitchen ceiling. ☆★☆★☆

Oh! and plus.... my Mum has always said that if the tree is not taken down before the 1st of January you will have bad luck all year..... :-(

I don't take it down then because of luck, but I'm sick of it by then. In Jan /Feb the drapes are closed and dark with the heat so can't see things that well anyway inside and we are living outside and at the swimming pool.

The opening sentence only prompted a mini meltdown I'm afraid. Is Christmas really that close?!

Growing up, the tree was generally up a week before Christmas Day, then taken down on January 6.

It's a long story. About 30 years ago, I had a 5, a 3 and 1 year old, and it was a cold horrible rainy cup day (1st Tuesday in November) so, I thought I would put the Christmas tree up to keep them entertained. Next year, cup day rolls around and Miss 6 asks, "are we putting up the Christmas tree today Mummy?"

I replied something along the lines of "Cup day is way too early for the Christmas Tree to go up!" To which she replied, "but we did last year ......"

And that my friends is why, to this day, we put the Christmas tree up on Cup Day. So word to the wise, don't create any precedents with a child with the memory of an elephant.

My partner and I put up our Christmas Trees, a Christmas Village and a Nativity Crib mid November. We put a lot of effort into it and it breaks my heart to have it up for just a few weeks. And it looks so darn pretty Will post pics soon.

Today !...the weekend after my daughters birthday...it's become somewhat of a tradition now so that we can enjoy it for at least a month

We put ours up on the weekend closest to Dec1 so next weekend is the beginning of Christmas for us. My two little people will be over the moon

I'm from a European background ... Italian and Catholic.

Christmas means celebrating the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem.

I hold onto generations of passed down tradition ...

We celebrate December 6th as St. Nicholas Day (European Father Christmas) ... this is the day that all the house & garden decorations go up!

We celebrate January 6th as The Epiphany (this is the 12th day of Christmas - when the Kings went back home) ... this is the day that all decorations get packed away.

That's one month of relevant religious dates/events ... just enough time to truly appreciate celebrating the birth of Jesus with family and friends - whether gift giving or not - and "ooh-ing and ahh-ing" over the home Christmas decorations without getting bored with them.
