How to modernise the exterior of this house??

render with timber features? clad with blueboard? stackstone? just paint?
the garage is besser blocks, but the house is rough/bumpy bricks.
hit me with ideas :)

Sound like good ideas to me. Orange door would look good with dark grey render. Stain any timber work charcoal.Also add horizontal boards at the house gable.
Incorporate the low wall in the front fence idea by making it higher - maybe just slats so the garden can be seen through it. The mail box could be in there too.
Make a further statement with fast growing trees to create an arch over the entry gate.

Comments (11)Love the 80' house, because you have a lot of sun to deal with a pergola from just above the front door running along the garage wall (minus the furniture) you could set a clear roof on top of the slats for shelter from rain. could even consider a similar pergola at a lower level running across from the front entrance and above the two front windows, these can be built to help block summer sun. Maybe render the garage wall to break up the brick and paint same as the garage door and timber above, this looks pale beige /grey, then this colour above windows remembering that window and door frames are cream, they can be painted. please keep the 80's door celebrate it....See MoreNeed help! Comments (54)I would start with making a decision on the carport first. Start by talking to the council as you may not be able to do a double carport (and the single carport at your neighbours looks like a tight squeeze!) Also as Missmel said you should probably also make a decision whether to paint or not early on. If you are going to go with carport, paint, new awning and possibly porch windows you are getting into a whole new look so I would start talking a professional about the best way to design it. As an alternative to the porch enclosure could you get the front windows double glazed to reduce noise? If it was my place I think I would only be changing the awning, paint the fences, landscape, and maybe do a single carport if its really needed (plus the tiling etc that you mentioned). Some new fretwork might be nice too. To me the main thing to change is the bullnose, as you said its not original and it looks heavy and dominating. Comments (5)it's a gorgeous house, nothing as awful as your description: think Roman mid century modern for inspiration but you must keep the breeze bricks (with an extra railing to bring it up to safe legal balcony height 865cm? and the stone panelling but the stacked bricks and the stair railings look too dainty and would be better with a solid framework to match the chunky pergola and, unless you have a gorgeous view from inside the house, consider making the front upstairs balcony railing in a solid panel (try painting the glass to trial a dark colour) and clad the whole upstairs balcony wall with the Scyon panelling but i prefer the dark (painted dark grey?) brick at the front with the very distinctive square white arch......See MoreImprove and Modernise Existing House Plan (25 year old home)
Comments (15)your house looks like an 80's home with a sunken lounge. I live in an 80's single level house like yours and love the spacious feeling, do you have raked ceilings? If it was me I would make small changes so suggest the following, 1) If the eave is deep enough I would push your sons bedroom wall out this would give him a good sized bedroom with access to the next bedroom and bathroom for his "PAD" 2) There is a flow problem with the house with accessing the bedrooms as you have to step down into and back up from the family/rumpus/living at two points. Keeping the "fireplace" insitu I would take part of the internal bedroom to allow for a passage across from the entrance to the bedroom wing. the reduced bedroom would make a great study or guest room. you can keep both step down points or close off the wall from the fireplace to the master bedroom 3) another problem with the house is internal access to the alfresco, at the moment it would only be via the family/rumpus or master bedroom, I suggest that the alfresco decking be split level to allow for large sliding doors coming off the new open plan kitchen. The door into the existing kitchen be kept but remove the laundry which will allow for a bigger dining table. 4) The laundry could be moved into the planned office/guest.pool room which would be perfect if there was access down the L/H side of the house for hubbie coming home and needing a cleanup which would be done in the same space, which could also be his man cave!! 5) The granny flat needs to be sorted by a local designer to get the best possible result, I have heard that a studio is more readily approved over a granny flat (siriuskey)...See MoreMike Todaro
