New kitchen - stay with gas or go electric?

I currently have a gas cooktop and electric oven but am considering options for my new kitchen. We have installed solar panels which cover our electricity costs most of the year, so I'm thinking it might be wise to get rid of my gas cooktop and replace with an electric one. I must say I'm attracted to the easy cleaning and look of some of the sleek electric cooktops. Any ideas or advice?

Go induction for electric option, or keep gas as well for certain types of cooking: copper pan, ceramic pans etc.

Samantha B I just completed my kitchen Reno in Perth. My pantry was also bricked up like yours. Literally doubled the space by getting rid of it but we found out after that the pantry was structural & we had to put an extra support beam in the roof instead ($800) so be careful of that! We completely moved the plumbing, gas & electrics & it only cost a few hundred! So don't be afraid to do that as long as u know decent priced tradies! We ended up doing nearly everything ourselves & went with a masters flat packed kitchen & sourced our own stone benchtops dirt cheap ($2500 installed for a 2m bench & a 1.5m island each with one waterfall edge.). . Its just way too much timber! So the floor should stay, because its harder to change. Start by definitely at least pull out the part of the kitchen with the weird enclosed fridge space. that really cramps the room. Then pull of and replace the cabinet doors and the laminate bench top. pick some amazing tiles and have your husband work his magic! Paint the walls a nice colour to really make the space look more vibrant. Get rid of those horrible blinds completely! We are doing out kitchen up and we don't have much money or skills or access to tradespersons anyway. So we are keeping it to a minimum. Do it little by little. We started with a new stove with really changed the feel of the room. We plan to just paint the cabinets.

@mazpt, yes of course. Here are a few more pictures showing how kitchen, living and dining, and outdoor deck and bbq area flow together. Oska kitchen is really neat in detailing; wood grain on the doors for example, are matched across as many doors as long as a 2.4m sheet allow. Floor turned out very nice too. Light natural colour, wide and long boards, laid length way all the way from front door to the back makes the space looks a bit bigger. Although it is still a floating floor, there are minimal floor movement that make squeak sound, most of the floor are feels solid. I hope that floor squeaking noise will settle over time.

unless induction is in the budget, stick with gas, it's so great to cook with.

Have you got ceiling fans in kitchen? If yes, avoid gas. It cools the flame and often blows it out altogether! I wish for induction...one day I will have it

I have always had gas cooktop & electric oven & know that others love the induction. If you have solar power then induction make sense for economy. Many years ago when power outage was an issue I always had a source of heat for cooking but hopefully those days are long gone???

Do you have natural gas or bottled as bottled is expensive & said to become more so in the future?

Many of the modern gas cooktops that has flame failure feature would not operate without electricity which is required to turn on a value to let gas through. So those days are long gone, LouieT, in a different sense, ha ha.

Thanks everyone for your great advice. I wasn't really aware of induction but it sounds great. I've waited a long time for my new kitchen so don't mind spending a bit more.

It is a worry to me that we are beholden to the powers that be in any case...there's always the bbq or the camping oven at a pinch ;)

Definitely stay with the gas for the cook top. Gas is far better for quick, even cooking, plus if you change, you will need to pay for an electrician to change it over.
