Wood tile floor combination how to specify?

How do I ensure that the join between a tiled floor and 'wood or carpet floor are flat and don't have a wide metal strip for expansion?
Is it possible to have polished cement joining against real wood, laminate, or engineered?
There are hundred of great photos of various combinations and I have seen some excellent solutions, but I can't find any real info about the rules, and I suspect I will need to be very clear about not having those nasty strips before the build starts.

If it's a concrete slab construction the plan/specification should allow for your different flooring types. For example if you're having real wooden floor boards on battens over concrete throughout then the finished height will need to align with finished height of tiles (for example) in the bathroom and laundry. The slab would be poured higher or lower in the tiled areas to achieve a level finished surface throughout. What this really means is that it's best to know & specify your flooring for each area & discuss it with your builder before construction commences.
If it's all one level then it can be overcome by screeding to raise the level of tiled areas to match the height of the wooden flooring. However if your wooden flooring is direct stick, therefore finishing lower than tile you may end up with a small tile edge. In this case a metal strip is used along & under the edge of the tile at the junction to protect the edge of the tile.

It is possible to have polished concrete & wood floors finishing level however you need to make decisions before commencement ie. floorboards on battens, engineered flooring, or laminated flooring, as they would all have different finishing heights.

Hi Jen and everyone else who has made a comment. You always need to consider your personal use in a space, if there is a lot of water involved tiles a definitely the best choice. Timber look alike tiles just like the Hampton style is a bit fashionable at present like many things were before. What is really important is to really love what you select or what someone may select for you. If you love the selections then they will work for you for many years to come and if they are proportionately correct and balanced and not clashing with other choices; suiting your climatic and general environment and effectively in harmony with there surrounds then these choices will work for others too down the track. Poor choices and poor design which is not well thought through is really the true reason for why things seem date or they just do not work. So all in all Jen timber tiles may be the best choice based on what you have told us about your space.

What natural light do you get in the room/what orientation? i.e. is it a 'cold' or 'warm' room? If it's a colder room, I'd go with a grey with orange/red undertones to warm it up a bit, or if it's a warm room you could get away with a cooler grey, maybe green undertones to compliment the maroon. Or you could even try a green rather than grey. The Aerobus is a blueish grey so will be cooler. As others have said you would probably want a lighter tone than this for the walls (unless you're purposely going for a dark dramatic mood). 'Miller Mood' is a couple of shades up in the Colour Atlas. Get sample pots and paint a section on each wall, or paint a white bit of card and stick to the wall to see how the light is at different times of day.

Hi, Just want to share some advice I wish I had before I had all of my floors recovered . The carpet for the bedrooms stairs and hall was straightforward so was as quoted which also included the installation. I was also quoted for Hydrocork which was recommended to me as a floating flooring by a large well known flooring company here in New Zealand - disaster - it is now 7 months on and I still have the faulty floor down and It looks like I am going to be $10,000.00 while retailers, installers and suppliers duck and dive. Just make sure you get a Scope for the installation and find out what happens when either the product or installation is faulty - remembering that not all faults with flooring show up immediately. I just don’t want anyone else to go through this.
