Positioning of cooktop on island bench
Comments (8)I have a 60cm induction cooktop, it has 4 zones, 1 with a booster. I've never had all 4 going at one time. I guess it depends on how much and what type of stovetop cooking you do, if you use small/medium pots or larger pots & pans. The 80cm cooktops seem to mostly have 4 zones but more space between each zone & there are more rectangular shaped options, whereas the 60cms are generally square in shape....See Moreneed help w/ kitchen layout (advice on sink/oven placement & function)
Comments (21)Our island is 900 depth, 2400 wide, with a sink in the middle (opposite the cooktop), which works well for us. Plenty of prep area either side of the sink (mind you, it's a single undermount sink, about 500mm wide, with no drainboard). If we were going to use the island for actual meals, ours is only deep enough for a person either side of the sink. So, if you're thinking of having the island as a dining area, go to the 1200 depth. Just walk around it to clean it. On the other hand, if the island is going to be for prep, and a place for guests to prop up a glass of wine and chat while you're getting dinner, 900 is fine. Our dishwasher is to the immediate left of the sink, and we have pull out waste bins underneath the sink. We have 1200 mm space from island to the wall side and the range top, and about the same to the other ends. Our fridge, which isn't huge, is in a 900 mm+ cavity which would be big enough for a deeper fridge. It's in relatively the same place your fridge is, and works fine there. Hinges are on the non-kitchen side of the door, so it opens into the kitchen. Cabinets beside it are a bit more in depth, so fridge and cabinets line up nicely. 850 for your fridge seems reasonable to me. I wouldn't put that study where you have it: I think you'll need all of that butler's pantry for butlering type storage. My 5 cents worth based on new house, new experience, absolutely no kids in the equation!...See MoreRelocating washing machine taps
Comments (4)you'll also need to add on the cost of a new counter and/or whole new cabinet and counter and to replace the damaged tiles when you move the taps and it would also be good to hang the dryer directly off the wall and maybe add some wall cabinet or shelves for all the cleaning products and maybe the power point should be moved and are there tiles under the old cabinet? but, assuming no unexpected problems and you have the old cabinet rebuilt or a new cabinet built with the new counter and to allow for extending the sink drainage sideways and ready to reinstall it would hopefully be under $750 for the plumber plus new taps and fittings (although you should be able to reuse the old sink and taps) cabinetmaker, tiler and electrician ..but with careful planning the plumber might be able to do all their work on the same day but all depends on condition of the existing cabinet and how long it takes to have the new cabinet ready and precise location of the existing plumbing...only way to know for sure is to arrange for some quotes but you need more than just a plumber so maybe it would be worthwhile to contact a bathroom company that can organised all the different trades and coordinate everyone to do their part in the right order...See Morekitchen remodel - put the sink under the window?
Comments (5)Hi Heather and Malcolm, thanks so much for your input! Good to know about the face panels, Malcolm, that would be way cheaper and easier than getting the window shortened, I’m guessing. The handle on the sliding opening window is movable so we can slide it higher and will still be easily accessible. I wonder if it would be hard to clean down in the sill space behind the face panels. Sorry, I should have said - yes we are intending to have an island of bench in the middle there, same spot as current bench left of current sink. The dishwasher is in it, actually, just left 90degrees of the current sink, so I’m a little worried that might be weird having it away from sink when sink has been moved. Maybe we should move both dishwasher and sink and put side by side in new kitchen? As for the fridge, it’s on the back wall (photo below) so we’ll just leave that in current position I think, probably....See MoreJodie Bennett
