If you have light issues, go with lighter rather than darker walls. I actually quite like it the way it is, but agree with the above comment, you need to go a bit more bold with the cushions and some of the art. The walls are the background; it's what's on them that matters. You like oriental carpets so go for some big copper or brass trays on the walls to give it a tribal feel. It would look terrific with your leather sofa and other furniture.

But, for sure, ditch the drapes in the spare bedroom.

Thanks for all the advice - this is a great website! The room with the curtains is to be a baby nursery which I think will forgive that rather expensive and recent design mistake. We're definitely very appreciative for being assigned a style - Modern Western - we like it! We're provisionally going to do with Dulux White Duck for the whole house (which is close to Self Destruct - perhaps a little more neutral), we're adding the Freedom chair below and I'd like to replace the backsplash tiles in the kitchen and add a pendant light that we can move between the island bench and the dining table.

I like the duck colours you've posted - they all look good. I would possible paint the wall that the bookcase is on, a brown colour the same as the bookcase and that would make it 'blend' - that's the wrong word but I hope youknow what I mean - into the wall as if it is a built in.

I have to agree with others - keep it white.

However, if you must change the colour, take a look at Dulux Hogs Bristle.

Hello Tom.

Your apartment looks lovely in white, however, white has the effect making whatever is on it really stand out when there isn't very much else in white, and therefore a bit disjointed (that's why your kitchen area looks so nice).

To overcome this, either add more white elements to the furniture/furnishings (eg. you could paint the bookcase white), or add more colour to the walls.

I was originally going to recommend White Duck, but you do have a lot of browns, so the Hogs Bristle (I know, but it is popular for a reason), will help to tie everything up a bit more. You might also like to consider the use of wallpapers on some walls (make great backdrops behind beds), as well as bolder/larger artwork or a cluster of smaller pieces, soft furnishings to tie in with the wall colours, as well as other touches that introduce a "feature colour" throughout.

Darker shades to complement/contrast against Hogs Bristle will also do well behind the bookcase in the lounge, as well as behind the beds, some areas of your kitchen - with accessories in the same colour way (and corresponding complimentary colours).

Hello Tom,if U R planning a baby I would advise U NOT to put any wall paper!!!! the chemical to remove the glue is EXTREMELY toxic and carsogenic(not sure about the spelling?)speaking from experience.The experts will advise U that the wall paper has been around 4 a long time.It also have been out for a LOOOOOOONG time as well.Now it is BACK!!! good luck :-)
