Would you consider building a home using Passive Solar Design?
Comments (50)After I had finished my Archi Masters I was working for an architecture firm who also did a small amount of work for a volume builder. They were actually a pretty good quality builder and at least got the orientation of their 'pre-designed' plans correct. We had the ability to make minor changes to every job and it pained me to see so many simple to implement passive options not being incorporated. Had most of their clients known that they would be saving MONEY over the longterm by making a few minor changes to suit their site, they all would have done it. The problem is unless someone can sell this idea to them as a financial/lifestyle choice, many just think it is about saving the world. It is a no-brainer if you have in interest in it, but for those who don't know, there is no-one there selling it to them, especially on the lower end of the market....See MoreWhat is this and how do style it?!
Comments (39)I'd suggest framing it out and using it as a window seat. A carpenter could get that done in half a day. Anchor the frame to the wall, get a custom cushion made and fill it with some cushions and you have a beautiful space to read. Bonus is the minimal cost....See Moreideas for Indoor/outdoor space
Comments (10)my suggestion would be a solid brick wall with full width lowlight double glazed sound proof sliding windows (about 750 of the floor and only about 600 mm tall so that you can look at your gorgeous palms from a seated position without seeing above the fence, also add matching sliding glass doors to completely enclose the space and paint the new wall a dark colour so the focus is on the view....and, if you don't already have some roof ventilation a ceiling fan and roof vent will make the space more comfortable when you need to keep it all closed up for privacy and the side fence needs to be tightened up to cover the gaps and also paint the whole fence in the darkest colour to highlight the palms...sound is like air and water and can squeeze through the smallest gaps so all this effort and expense will be a great investment in your peace and privacy...See MoreLooking for some unique ideas for a beach house
Comments (11)Whereabouts? Living inland I always think there are colours that don't work here and work beautifully for coastal settings, but I also wonder if that varies depending on other things like latitude and whether it's more of a coastal bush block or an open site with beach views. My first thoughts, echoing some of what oklouise said, were decks, outdoor shower, shade, insect screening. Depending on how close to the water you are you'll have to think about salt tolerance when choosing building materials and plants. While 'beach house' evokes thoughts of summer, if you are in a southern region plan for winter as well with good solar orientation and insulation (I spent a miserable winter holiday in a beach house once with terrible condensation)....See More
