Help my lounge room is a big beige blank canvas!

Hello!

We have recently moved into a house after years of living in tiny apartments and not used to filling a large living area!

I just bought the beige covers for the couches and ottoman (previously we had grey covers which really clashed with the carpet here). We are not in a position to replace the couches at the moment so want to make do with those.

I like the idea of a dark blue/navy rug and cushions. I brought this rug home from ikea just to see how it fit but it seems much too small (1.7x2.4m) so I think we will need a 2x3m rug for this space? Is navy the right colour to break up the sea of beige?

Is this the best layout for the couches?

What sort of TV cabinet would work in that corner or are we better off wall mounting the TV?

Any suggestions for the empty section of the room? The previous owners had a dining table there and that seems like the obvious idea but we have our dining table in the kitchen area and an outdoor setting so don't think we would ever actually use another table in this space.

Hi Julia

You have a lovely big space to use.

Is it possible to divide and conquer the space?

Use the blank wall for the cabinet and TV etc. then face one sofa that way, with a window to the left - if I'm reading the photos correctly.

Use the other sofa to make a more formal area at the other end of the room.The window would be at the right of that sofa. Include a coffee table and statement chair or two ! Aside table could hold a lamp to give a subtle glow in the evenings.

Another idea would be to have the sofas back to back with a sofa table between them, then a lamp could be added.

Bring in one or two big green plants to fill the corners.

Add cushions in green, blue and yellow. The rug you have would be big enough for the sofa up near the TV. Add a standard lamp here and use mostly blue cushions.

The room and furnishings are in a cool white while the carpet has a pink cast to it. Be careful how you combine things. Lots of white would moderate the problem.

What have you planned for the windows? Love to see the results.

1. I like the floor better without the rug

2. Colourful cushions will add warmth to the area - and I mean bold patterns and colours

3. 2 x large modern pieces of art on the walls. If they are small they will be wrong for the space. Once again, bold works with bright colours to match the cushions.

4. I like your chairs - they are neutral which can be enhanced with many different colours.

5. I love your windows with the outlooks onto the garden.

Ok, don't like the dark cushion, don't like the TV in the bedroom. You could go for pendant lighting using the same 'material' as the mirror? If you went for larger beside lamps while you have that mirror there, they would be fighting each other. In the programs I watch, they say to have 'a hero in the room'. In this case the mirror is the hero I think. Also the extra throw cushion for the bed could match one on the chair, so it ties in (or don't have one at all on the bed). If you did need a TV what about having one installed on the wall to the right of the chair,(looking at the photo) and make sure it can swivel out, so when you aren't watching TV in bed it can be against the wall, out of the way. Then you can have a lovely (glass) ornament or two, or a bunch of flowers sitting on it along with your photos. I love how you have your bed dressed, spot on! (without the dark cushion) I absolutely adore the blue shades in the duvet cover and I would draw those out into the room. Love that you have opened up your windows in the lounge. Maybe a throw rug and some colourful (same colours as in the duvet cover on your bed) cushions on the lounge suite as nothing is really popping! There doesn't seem to be any colour except for the flowers and the photos. Colourful paintings on the wall would be lovely too. Maybe the potted plants could be in coloured (as in your duvet cover) pots instead of white. I know you weren't asking about the lounge and if you are happy with it, then that is all that matters. it's ok Oskuee, I still haven't really finished the lounge, really? this is a great website, I can refer back to comments and advice for future reference as well. I definitely want to find a nice light/s for over the table, I just don't know what will look good, I have been scouring houzz and a few other sites trying to find something that might suit and perhaps improvise with as well with a similar/replica? I still have a couple of pieces by the dining table I want to sell or swap? as I had my eye on a beautiful 2mtr long 1mtr high buffet, but for $3000+ (perfect dimensions and look) Which hides all the dishes and glasses and a built in hidden wine rack : ) I couldn't justify spending that much so have an empty space waiting for something to come along? I have even considered trying to build my own? but don't want it to look banged up either? hehehe

Go neutral. I don't know your style but here are some ideas. Buy some big wide striped wallpaper and attach it to the wall behind the sofa. You Can either choose horisontal stripes or vertikal stripes. If you can't find the right wall paper you Can paint the wall in two different color. big wall paper coved canvases makes a room appear bigger. If you dont want the paint the wall. This will make the room mor cohisive. Over the sofa you Can hang a round mirror to make the room more cozy. Some Choose some big transperant lamps. To the exterior go brown. Check out IKEA website. Play around whit Some bright pattened pillow - maybe matching to the wallpaper. You Can allways Continue to redecorate with pillows, curtains, and maybe buy an ottoman for mor seating. Hi Pete, 1. Given the tight-ish space, you're probably best off wall mounting the TV, and choosing a smaller but still rectangular clear glass topped coffee table as that will appear to take up no space at all. 2. Hi Juliahocking - thanks for the ideas! Sorry I saw your comments on the weekend and then forgot to come back and update after I had moved the furniture around.

I like the idea of moving the sofa and creating two separate spaces within the room. The problem is that the section of the room with the blank wall doesn't have a tv point so would need to get that installed. I moved one of the couches there to face the wall and it felt a little bit cramped, and the other section of the room seemed to have a lot of space to fill without the second couch. Is this what you meant?

I found the photos from the real estate listing to show the previous owners set up, they might give a better indication of the space? We moved the TV to the corner because we didn't like it blocking the window, but i don't think the corner is ideal either.

Do you think it would work to have a couple of chairs in the "dining" section of the room, or would that be strange to be facing to the back of the couch?

Would love any ideas to make the windows prettier. I love the outlook but the brown screens and frames are not very attractive!

Is it that rug you don't like, or just the idea of a rug in general in this room? I wasn't sure about a rug on top of carpet but thought it could be a good way to break up the space and add some colour. I am planning to return that rug on the weekend and continue my search!

I agree I love the green outlook and it is really nice to lie on the couch and look out (while wondering how to set up the room!) :)

I'm with juliahocking.. I think creating two section is a good Idea.. TV section where the dining table was before.. Mount the TV or use TV console and add book shelves on two sides.. You can display books and your other favourite decor items.. One couch facing that wall and maybe get a round ottoman that can be used as footrest/ storage and also as a coffee table when guest are over by using a large round tray on top on it.. Lamp
on the left side would look nice..
The other sofa can be used in the other section, with window at the front and left, and add two occasional chairs and a coffee table. I found some pictures for inspiration. The wall on the right as you walk in you can use 1 large or 2 medium size artworks or colour that wall in navy blue ( as a feature wall) and put up your family photos (same sizes frames would creat a more uniformed look) please see pic below.
I think you had a good idea with that blue rug, sounds nice, rugs are a good way to add texture and colour and frame the
area. Some different coloured cushions black & white, blue and orange cushions would look great too.
You have a nice area there, it's always exciting to decorate your new space. Would love to see the after pictures. All the best.

Beige, is enlivened by reds, burnt umber etc and those colours work well navy blue. Not sure the rug's colours are helping here.
