Can I fit an Ensuite Bathroom in my Bedroom?

We are a family of three with 1 bathroom/3 Bedrooms in a small 60's house. Our daughter is a young teen and we feel we all need a bit more privacy/space-especially when friends sleep over. Thinking about adding an ensuite to our main bedroom, but concerned about size, position and layout. Our wardrobe is 690mmdeep so we would demo that and use this space, add a wall(maybe open at the top) sky lights as its South Facing and move the Bedroom door over. The window needs to be taken into account as we don't want the design to look too added on. Failing this idea I think we would need a full scale reno and add to the back of the house ($$$$) or move! LOL. Any help appriciated. Room measures 4900mm(including the wardrobe) x3300mm window is approx. 2200mm

To save money, which we all like, you could consider an open plan ensuite. Or, use concealed slider doors to separate the bedroom and ensuite. Also, think about what furniture you need in the bedroom since you'll lose the robes - wardrobe, bed, side tables, tallboy etcetera, as this impacts on space for the ensuite. If there is plumbing connections at back of your robe that'll save a bit, but if not, to add in toilet, shower and handbasin is costly.

You'd need min. internal room width of 1m to add shower & toilet in the area where your current wardrobe is. If you take up that amount will there be enough space left in terms of how your bed is currently positioned? Would need to allow space for your current bedroom door to open, say 8-900mm, then add new wall for the ensuite, reducing the overall length of ensuite space to approx 2.3m. With shower at one end, 1mx1m, toilet at the other, 1mx1m, & basin in centre, it's getting a bit squeezy. Shower would probably need to be wet room style, rather than glass cubicle, to allow more free floor space when using the basin. Would you put wardrobes back in along the wall to the left of the entry door? If you draw this up what does the space look like?

If you plan to usually leave the door open to the powder room, I would have the woodwork match. If you don't, then do what makes you happy on the cabinets. As far as colors, I like ice blue in the bedroom and ecru in the powder room. That's what I've had for the last 5 years since we had to rebuild (after a fire) and I still love the colors. (Remember not to use yellow or green in the room where you will apply your make-up.)

We're building 4x3.5 Two with ensuite and the others with a jack and Jill. Life has changed unfortunately and now everyone in the household works, kids stay at home longer and ageing parents sometimes move in for care. At the moment we have a 3 x 1 and really the only thing we really want for is a second toilet, which growing up we had because we had the one out the back with the red backs.

my concern with the windows was to make sure that there is a window for light and ventilation for each separate space but it should be quite simple to build shelves to suit the windows in the wiw but what is the size of the windows in each room? that is width, height and distance above the floor?

If you can swap the toilet to the outside wall in en-suite that may allow a slightly bigger vanity. With bed 3 if that will be a study you could take space for master wardrobe. I note you really do need the extra master robe. If you are happy with only one bedroom on that level, maybe change the bathroom up their to a powder room and enlarge the en-suite.

Thanks for your comments. I measured up again today and have done about 6 different plans. I totally agree with you about the squeezy/squishy feel. I can make it work, but will it add value? I think we might have to abandon this idea as the outcome of having an "en suite" isn't enough of a reward to sacrifice the feel of the room and the original features of our Mid century Beauty. We have so much land unused so this may be the best option,b building a Parents retreat where we can start from scratch. Keep an eye out as I may be after advice for a Reno:)

There may be other options for you to gain an ensuite, but without knowing your current floor plan anything I suggest could be way off base. (But here goes with some ideas)...
1. Is the room next to your current main bathroom large enough to become the master, with access from it to the bathroom, which would then become the ensuite. Is there room anywhere else within the current floor plan to create a small main bathroom.
2. Can your current master become the lounge room (for example) & the lounge become master with ensuite, large robes & perhaps a study nook accessed from outside the bedroom.
Of course all this may be highly impractical, just some food for thought.

Thanks how2girl. We have been in this house for 25years, believe me I have had so many ideas, good, bad and crazy.

Design wise we are confined to the Current Floor plan. We would need to use roof space to get in light and ventilation- we have fairly easy access to current plumbing under the house. Also our friend is a plummer/renovator. I'm adding this basic plan I have drawn up so if any amazing ideas (that I haven't already thought of) come to anyone I would love to hear them.thanks

I think you can definitely do this, provided you can move your door which you said you can. I have an ensuite at the side of my main bedroom - it's small but perfectly adequate. I measured it and including all external walls the ensuite takes up 1.4 x 3.05m space (my bedroom including the ensuite is 4.7m long so shorter than yours.). My room is wider (3.9m) so I can have a wardrobe along the wall where your door is and the bed on the opposite wall. But for you, I'd keep your bed where it is and look at putting your bed in a 'wardrobe wall'. you have the depth (1000mm) before the window starts and I think 3.3 m is wide enough ... ~800mm robe either side of bed. See pics below for what I mean. Only you will know if this is too squeezy but an ensuite can make so much difference to your lifestyle, I think it could be worth it!

P.S - To make the layout work, the entry to the ensuite needs to be in the middle with a sliding door, but there are some great doors available. I'm planning to convert mine to a barn door style like this one.

it's doable my ensuite and WC measures 1.2x3.8 roughly lol

the WC at one end with it's door to the bedroom..and also into our hallway..

the walk in shower backing on to the WC..

then the vanity opposite the walk in..

I don't have a door to the shower and vanity..

our bedroom is 3.2x3.25m or 3.8x3.25 if includes our BIR still enough for a QS bed and two bedsides.

from your plans I'd move the door ..then use that 1.7m to do the ensuite.

if you leave the WC where I left mine and have two way openings it can open into your corridor to be used by your family as well..

I feel your dilemma. We too are in an old-ish beauty but 3bed and 1bath isn't quite cutting it for us, specially the morning rush. And kids 4&6 will wont privacy at some stage. Wish a builder would just knock on my door and start work.
