To Use White Bricks or Render Standard Bricks White

I'm so confused. We are building in a marine environment and want to have white brick exterior walls. If we render there will be constant upkeep with the paint. If we use white bricks, will they stay white? White bricks don't seem to look nice for very long or are the new white bricks better quality? Would love some input.

Any textured brick or render will attract some dirt. But bricks are very washable. And you can get very pale coloured render that you may not need to paint. You could even use another type of cladding. I'm adding more choices rather than helping you eliminate any. Sorry. Good luck.

Just avoid render and paint as much as possible because as you mentioned theres the upkeep. The new (newish) white glazed bricks do look good but may be better as a feature. Too much of one colour or material can end up being bland so a combination of materials would be my preferred choice. Have a look at the polished face concrete blocks, the glazed face bricks.... these could be teamed up with a cheaper face brick.

Remember the whole project should be considered such as landscaping, window colours, roof colour, etc. as well as the walls. A very exciting time for you, enjoy!

Im not sure how much brick is seen around the window frame, if its only a little brick, you could paint it, although I'd prefer it be a smooth rendered finishor plaster like your other finished walls, because if there are three surfaces visible in there, none will be a feature, and all will look incohessive. To let the ply wall take the focus the plaster is perfect in contrast, so if absolutely necessary, pair. He brick white, although my recommendation is to gy rock and paint, just with he back wall in marine ply. Good luck, I'd love to see your finished result. By the wY, mentioned split battens to hang the ply, if you're unfamiliar, it's where timber battens are cut in half on the diagonal through section, and one half is fixed to the wall, the other the ply sheet, when they go together they become a secure locking fixing. Any handy person or tradesman will know how to do hat, without glueing or messing up the brick wall. It's quick, cheap and secure, and best of all can be removed without much effort to allow you flexibility in time.

I don't have the dimensions right now, but it's small, probably just big enough to fit a single bed when the kid gets older, but will more likely be a study down the track (great sunlight with huge windows). The cot/changetable/dresser will fit, but it's not the type of room I'll spend a lot of time in on account of the size. Just for baby sleeping/changing. Definitely painting, thinking white, maybe a pale grey for the wainscotting. It does get great light which helps. I'd love to have a feature wall wallpapered but I just think it'll close the space too much. The wainscotting will definitely close the space visually, but won't impair the fit of the furniture. We could just leave the recesses (hoping they're a bit less obvious when painted white) and place furniture in front, but I'd prefer more of a finished look. Thanks for the tips!

I initially thought 'no way would you put back the window boxes back' . Then I looked at pic 1 again , and while it mightn't be true to history ( I assume window boxes were always the width of the window , and shutters half that width ) , I'd actually be tempted to go twice the width ( and like everyone , have it all in white ) and put some hanging creepers , and some colourful reds and violets and yellows ( daisies and the like ) -- it would add some subtle colour , but also a nod towards the trees , and really look integrated .

Hi Sandra,

Being in a marine environment either option you go with will require a bit of maintenance over time the salt air is pretty unforgiving. If you do decide to go with render make sure you go with an acrylic render it will last alot longer and avoid cracking much better than if you go with a traditional cement render only.

Generally the cement render is applied and then the acrylic render is applied over the top this makes the cement render a lot stronger and more flexible. You can tint the acrylic render to the colour you wish so if you want you don't even have to paint it. Although some people still apply a bonding agent and paint it regardless.
