I agree with your concerns - 1400mm wide would be best for the space. Are you having two basins? (very useful if a couple of people use the bathroom!) Or did you want bench area?

Thanks very much Adorned Interiors, confirming what I thought. Considered two basins but cost a factor and thought 1400mm would look crowded with 2 basins...plus our teen using a lot of bench space for blow dryer/straightener etc

I would go with 1600mm (i.e. fit to the area with no wasted "space" on either side). I would also include two sinks. Some drawers might work well for easily storing and accessing bulky items like hair dryers and straighteners.

This might cost a bit more, but I think it would be the most practical solution and would provide the best value for money in the long term. Personally, I would wait and save more money to ensure that I got what I wanted and what will work best for me.

A three way bathroom can cost twice as much to tile than one large bathroom, ( sometimes more, depending on your tiles, there is a lot of cutting, it is in fact 3 rooms , each with its own tile bed, if you are doing it yourself, have a tiler give you a quote before , if you are having a professional business renovate in Sydney about $ 30K for all labour only. for a 3 way , this should be about $ 22/ $ 24 K for one large room, with nib wall vanity to toilet, niches to shower and bath, anything cheaper we would have doubt about quality of waterproofing, tiling, sound insulation

To make a decision, go and sit on the edge of your bath by yourself and visualize your finished bathroom. one large ( less expensive room, ) or three small rooms.

ON paper ideas can be appealing. Buying at the place where trade buys can keep cost lower. e.g Kaldewei Eurowa made in Germany steel bath 2.5 mm thick $ 400

You state it is your master bathroom,to us your master bathroom should have the look, if you go to sell your home this could make/ break the sale.

Back to your vanity, the larger vanity will make the room look cluttered.

Thanks Steve and Ken Evers, great food for thought. I hear you re the cost of tiling 3 way, but this is our forever home and our pre-teen boy and teen girl love that one can have a shower in privacy while the other is blowdrying etc,...plus added cost of tiling appears to be off set by leaving plumbing as is. Hopefully modern fittings will overcome the fact that it's an old fashioned 3 way! We now have the problem that due to plumbing issues, we may not be able to have wall hung at all unless we're prepared to have a pipe underneath it (chrome covered but still)… back to drawing board on vanities -

I didn't know these 3 way bathrooms are considered old fashioned?? I think they are the bees knees for family bathrooms! Makes so much sense.

An excellent idea if budget allows! We have a double bowl basin in our 3 way which is excellent for when 3 teenagers need to share. However, I understand the need for benchspace too - finding a vanity with the biggest storage possible can help. Dummy walls are great for hiding plumbing (see powder room photos). A big decision only you can make tashnmitch!

Thanks so much all for advice! We've decided to go with 1400mm wide, 600mm deep, wall hung vanity with single offset basin. This should give us plenty of storage. Builder has said at worst we'll see a chrome pipe under the vanity if kneeling down, but he'll probably do a dummy wall as suggested so you won't see anything!

I would reconsider using a custom made vanity. It does not need to cost the world and it will fit properly. Likewise a nice ceramic basin does not need to break the bank. Try Ebay. Below are photos of the vanity in our recently completed main bathroom (a three way I think?)
