Do I tile the entire bathroom walls from floor to ceiling?

In our new bathroom you walk in and see the basins. You have to walk behind to the left to go to the shower (area is nearly 2m long x 1m wide) or behind it to the right to go to the toilet. The ceiling exhaust will go in the "shower area", and we are still considering putting frosted frameless glass doors to the shower and toilet or leaving it all open.

I have noticed that a lot of American bathrooms are not tiled from floor to ceiling. Our layout makes the basin area look more like a "dressing room", and by leaving the walls untiled it would allow for artwork as well.

I would appreciate thoughts on do we tile just the shower area (floor to ceiling) or do all 3 "areas" - shower, basin and toilet.

I prefer to tile only the areas that need to be tiled (shower, bath, splashback etc) - partly just a matter of taste, but also because if you want to freshen up the room 5 years down the line, repainting a few walls is way easier than ripping out all the tiles.

Depends on height of the ceiling,and size of your room. ceilings up to 2700 tile to ceiling ( replace ceiling, it is not a good look new bathroom with old ceiling, unless featured ceiling, you need to remove cornice,

Tile all walls to ceiling, add new cornice for professional look ) Have you thought of feature wall behind basins, same as floor tiles ?

after tiling to the ceiling in my high ceiling old bathroom i've decided that "next time" i would prefer to keep the tiles in line with the top of the architraves around doors and windows...tiles are there for a long time and so many tiles make me feel like i'm in a public bathroom and although i love the look of the new bathroom i miss the opportunity for some colour and/or texture with paint or wallpaper that can be changed so much more easily, cheaply and more often that extra high tiled walls

I really like that floor. I hope you are able to keep it once the complexities of waterproofing are revealed. Really large tiles would not be era appropriate. And they were moving away from subway tiles by then. Perhaps 20-25cm square in running bond for that decade? Colour will be easier to pick when the green is gone. I think bright whites could be useful accents but were not really available back then, except whitewash. So depends on how true to the age you want to be or if you’d prefer to have your own blend of the best of two eras.

What tiles are you using? The larger tiles can make it difficult to have breaks that make sense and going to the ceiling resolves this. I have floor to ceiling tiles in a small bathroom. I still like it. In a small space it gives consistency and it’s easy to clean. Like above I have a more traditional cornice matching the old cornices throughout the house. But for my next bathroom I’ll be having less tiles and adding VJ as well which also works with the house. Pick what works for your tiles and design. And as long as you avoid the basic package builders minimal tile layout, which screams cheap, you’ll be fine.
