What new light fittings would you buy?

Hi there. I'm in the middle of updating the light fittings in my house and don't know what to do with our long living area. The current spotlights provide good light but are ugly. What would you do? My hubby doesn't want to use down lights and I want something functional but possibly also a statement piece. Excuse the mess in the lounge room -still unpacking!)

Hi, I wonder what Hubbie does not like about down lights, I would go with LED down lights nicely spaced. I would choose to have the different areas/zones on seperate switches and maybe even the TV end with a dimmer for that area.

A lighting shop can help with the amount of lights needed for the room size. Even take your photo with you with the room dimensions.

The other thought I have is pendant/s over the table, but this can limit you to not being able to change the room furniture layout. If you went for a statement pendant in the TV end there are some super open wood looking ones that may go very nicely with the wood features in this room. Best wishes.

We had an issue that our relatively new fridge freezer didn't fit the space, we had no choice but to buy another. I was able to give my beautiful new old fridge to my parents for a holiday home they share with us all. I was happy with that, even though when you move the budget is always tight, once it is done you just have to put it in the history file.

Thank you all. Oskuee - actually, you may think that I am the selfish one. Out of the whole house my hubby only got the games and theatre to do what he wanted, the rest of the place was mine :-) It would be a glorious concert in the theatre! hah! There is no room left though as where the murphy bed is, is now the built in entertainment cupboards, and the murphy bed has been switched to the front wall. In the games room, we have a pool table, Neo Geo gaming machine, a bar fridge and some other manly type things. It COULD go in here, yes, and we might go this way, but I would prefer elsewhere (not the garage) SueM it is too long (145cm) to fit between the dining and kitchen/stairs. Vy, there is no retreat upstairs, and it is too big for the landing. Yeah, at this stage, it is likely to go in the games (to the left on the wall behind study) or under the aircon in the lounge. I had this really awesome idea to frame some of my grandmothers piano music, songs that were special to her and I, and have them as artwork on the wall behind the piano. This would have been so awesome near the front door. Sigh, hopefully it will still look nice wherever the piano ends up going. Thank you all again. Sandra

There are never any guarantees. Consider other factors besides the view. Is there a flood overlay? If so, can you get flood insurance? What is the orientation of the block, will you get Northern light to the living areas?

Not that it overly matters , but I just looked on Google Maps Street View , and our old beach place looks like the cedar shingles are still original -- theres none that look modern or replaced , they appear to have all aged evenly , and getting close on 50 years ! A couple of interesting things to me though -- it has been split into 3 flats -- well , there are 3 slots of the letterbox ( No idea how the doors , kitchens , plumbing , etc work , pretty sure it only had an entrance and a back door , both at ground level , and one stairs , when we had it ) -- and it was officially 3 bedrooms , and only 2 showers , 2 toilets from memory , although there was a 3 door garage downstairs and we'd have up to 20 people in total -- those camp beds and the like spread on the floor , cars and boats parked outside when busy . The garage has been converted into one flat , cars park in front and to the left side now , but I'd say its now 3 relatively compact places . And I was wrong about the roof -- it is a flat silver on Google Maps ( so almost certainly galvanised iron ) , with several skylight windows . I remember the skylights -- I always assumed the roof was cedar though .

With a long room like yours, I would recommend thinking about how you will use the different 'zones' of the room - so for example you may want something soft above the couch, enough to read by but also enough to relax under with a glass of wine in the evenings whereas over the table you may need something brighter for the kids to do their homework (or whatever your lifestyle lends itself to). Where possible I always recommend LED lighting - they are capable of producing both warm and cool light colours and can even be used in accent lighting. They are also very popular for their energy efficiency and they give off almost no heat which is an added safety feature.
