Filling gaps between timber floor boards can lead to disaster and is best avoided. Sanded and polished timber floors tend to swell slightly during the humid months of the year and shrink again in the drier months. This creates movement in the timber floor. If you fill the floor when the gaps are at their widest and then encounter some humid weather, the floors will swell, closing the gap and forcing the filling out of the grooves and cracking the timber floor finish. This looks far worse than gaps in the polished timber floors. If you can't live with the gaps, laying a engineered timber floor over the top may be your best choice. Painting your floors white is also best to avoid as this only accentuates the size of the gaps. Good luck with your decision. Engineered timber floors

I really like the pic that LesleyH posted. The wooden rail will be 'warmer' to the touch too, show less dirt and tie is with the stairs beautifully.....I thin it will 'ground' the whole look because, if I remember rightly, the stairs and front door are the only wooden features and the rest is a lot of very modern light grey/white/shiny features. I think another touch of warmth in the wood will be beautiful.

I agree that it can be upsetting at this stage but your timber will all darken naturally and the difference will become less obvious over time and once you have furniture and rugs in place it's likely to be one of those issues that only you and no one else will notice. And I defy anyone to not have something like this in their house which has been newly built/renovated. I know this isn't terribly helpful but I don't think ripping anything up to start again or going to great lengths to seek recompense from supplier/installer is going to help your blood pressure either (by all means raise concerns with them and ask for suggestions from them).
