Wall above fireplace (ethanol)

Hi all,

I'm almost done with my kitchen, stone is being placed tomorrow.
And now I need to focus on the half wall that divides the lounge room and the kitchen.
Please ignore the mess and boxes, it's kitchen stuff and it will go on a couple of days.
At the moment I have a big frame with lots of family photos, but I'm ready for a change, the area around the fireplace has the same wood we have on the floor, but I'm unsure on what to do on the top half.
The kitchen is white gloss with black granite benchtop, I have a big black couch on the lounge, we have bamboo flooring.
I have few ideas, but please give your advice :)
1- wall paper the the top half
2- mural
3- 3 clocks with Sydney (local time), Lisbon (hubby hometown) and Sao PAulo (my home town) just to add a personal touch.

I will try to place some photos of area and of my ideas...

After seeing your before/after photos in your [kitchen thread[(https://www.houzz.com.au/discussions/kitchen-reno-ideas-suggestions-please-dsvw-vd~3651370?n=11) I thought I'd bump this thread. I have a better idea of the whole space now. Have you had any more ideas of what to do?

I think by cladding the whole surround and wall above could have big impact and modernise so it ties in with your new kitchen. Also give some balance as it sits alongside the glossy black bench.

The photo with the clocks is just an idea but I think I don't want the clocks so out there (?)
Those photos now are some mural and wall paper ideas..

Can I just clarify, what is the black behind couch, adjacent to fireplace in the 2nd picture? Is this the back of kitchen cabinets? Or the uninstalled bench tops perhaps?

Painting plastered brick wall near combustion fireplace

I'd presume the combustion fireplace is a built-in unit. I remember ours heating the bricks up quite well. I don't see an issue plastering the brickwork but look to use 'Fyrechek' which is a fire retardant plasterboard. The bricks could also be rendered instead but I reckon you'd be able to pick the different surfaces once painted. I wouldn't think you'd need a heat resistant paint. The walls would be warm but no warmer than a wall copping direct summer sunlight.

any gas log fireplace should have very specific instructions for safe installation with measurements for distance from back and side walls, height above floor and height of any mantlepiece above the front of the heater and details of the correct method to enclose the flue..first check these instructions and then decorative finishes will be much easier to decide...if you haven't chosen your heater yet all the instructions should be available on line and this will also help decide the best heater for the space available

Hi there,

Thanks for taking time to comment :)

The black is the back of the kitchen bench, I have some black stools to go there once the kitchen is finished.

All the cabinets are white the only black bit is the bench top and the back of the extended cabinets that will be used as a breakfast bar and to entertain while I'm cooking:)

I would really like to see a large square mirror with an interesting frame as that will reflect back into the room giving a more spacious feel. Love the new colours of the kitchen.

What about placing the tv on the wall above the fireplace? Would that work in that room ?

Hi all,

I bought the painting!!
I'm waiting for it to be stretched, I will post photos after I hang it on the wall.
I like the idea of the shelves but I can't convince hubby to do more at the moment (after the work with the kitchen...)
After I place it on the wall if I don't like I will try the shelves as I quite like the idea, I have the some wood from the floor going on the wall of the fireplace but I don't think it would look nice if I place it all the way up...

I'm waiting on a stone (black) t be installed on top of the fireplace, so it should balance the area, and on the corner close to the wall I'm thinking of placing a lamp, or a vase or maybe a pot plant(?)

I like the idea of a plant but you'd have to take it away when you're using the fire won't you? Unless it's silk.

The fireplace is ethanol (more for the look) than for the heat. We have ducted air con :)
I will place a plant and see how it looks, but the idea of a red vase of some sort is appealing:)
