Kitchen success - thanks everyone!
I posted a design dilemma in July 2015 about our kitchen/walk in pantry/laundry. Thought I'd share success details of that plus the kitchen. Many thanks to everyone for sensible ideas back in July on pantry/laundry, especially LouieT and Riche Design :-) Thanks Sarah Tilley of Mi Designer Styling for excellent and timely advice re all my many (!) questions on layout, colours, finishes etc etc. Sensible but delicious advice/ideas/alternatives :-) Kitchen: Here's our (almost) finished kitchen (work still to do on stools, new fridge...) Cupboards laminate (laminex silver grey and charcoal), bench Essa stone promenade, end panels and splashback custom made (chez moi!), inspired by The Painted Hive (see below) and stackstone. Appliance cupboard below MW is 500 deep (bench is 700 deep), twin bifold doors. 'Cupboard' to left of fridge is actually an integrated freezer.

Walk in pantry/laundry The tall double doors on the right of the kitchen back wall are a 'hidden' entry to the walk in pantry/laundry. I ended up cutting the laundry in half to get a decent walk in pantry. This is all a very hard working space. Small but functional. Mail gets filed on left, whiteboard & corkboard on right with charging station above. Pantry shelves are 250 & 400 deep. In laundry: very small sink; dog sleeps below the clothes airer; clothes airer sits on lowered benchtop (when not outside) so it fits height with our 2.4 ceilings; so I can dry clothes even when raining... I can drop in an extra piece of bench when I want to make bench full width (obviously when clothes airer isn't there). WM below bench, dryer on wall above.
This was all part of a massive reno we did to turn our house around to be able to make more of the backyard :-) Old and new floorplans:

Comments (45)No, I'm sorry, but it doesn't work for me at all. That unrelieved expanse of shiny white is quite disorienting. You don't quite know where the light is coming from. But the colour isn't the main problem here. Although it isn't pretty, the "before" kitchen actually has a lot going for it. The new kitchen has the benches all at the same height, which is a problem because different kitchen tasks are most comfortable at different heights. The surface that houses your sink needs to be relatively high so that when you're using the sink you don't have to bend your back. That's uncomfortable! Conversely, a cutting surface is better if it's relatively low, because that way you can control the knife better. It's a safety thing. The new kitchen has the cooktop and the sink under wall-mounted cupboards. You're absolutely sure the extractor fan whisks all the steam and particulates out of there? Most don't, you know. And with the cupboards at that height, if you're standing close enough to cook or wash up can you see to the back of the bench? No, it's not you, it's the design. Look at the old kitchen. It has surfaces at a variety of heights, and although the sink is under a cupboard you can stir the sauce on the stove without bumping your head, I think. I could be totally wrong about this. Comments (16)They are a dark grey in a mat finish in a laminate rather than a two pack. My kitchen guy thought that the two pack is more easily chipped and more expensive. Heres a close up of the tile. We had trouble getting the exact tile for our stairs but there are lots like this out there. The splashback is a porcelain marble look tile. 90 X 60. Comments (5)I have a shaker style kitchen and went for a combination of knobs on the doors and pull handles on the drawers and I love the end result! Id go with your last two options, I wouldnt recommend the first two handles you have as they will date more quickly than the others (and also cleaning them would be a hassel)...See More

Overall width 1140mm x 800mm deep.
Shelves at back 400mm deep, side shelves 250mm deep.
Hope the pics help. Best I could get in the tight space! It was built in 2 halves hence the centre divide as it was the only way to get it in!

I am working on a tiny walk-in pantry for my new build; it is actually a pantry in a scullery, as most Chinese people do, I will use the scullery as a second kitchen (imaging the smoke and greasy fume from woking!) so I am desperately in need of a pantry to store (and protect) stuff. Our designer actually scorns the idea of a walk-in pantry in a scullery; anyway I've got only 1.0m * 2.2m space to work on. I need a worktop to marinade food (with hundreds of spices near by) and knead doughs for bread, plenty of shelves of different depth, and some floor space for tall things like steam mop etc.
The picture is what I now fancy about: when the sliding door opens, I will have wide clearance at the back to work on the benchtop (deeper part 600mm, shallower part 350mm), shallower benchtop is used for small appliances, and shelves of different depths on the left and bottom wall.
My husband laughs and says he'd never seen such an irregular pantry. Does it work at all? Any suggestion? Please!
