How do you celebrate Australia in your home?
Comments (8)I love Australian things and dream of visiting one day. As a child I had a stuffed Koala with a baby. I loved that! I gave it to friends that I thought would appreciate having a toy, (they were even more poor than us) but they didn't even say thank-you or play with it. I would have happily taken my stuffed toy back! :-( I love tropical flowers and visiting the Australian exhibits at whatever zoo has them. One day I dream of diving the Great Barrier, too. Someday... And of course we almost always have Yellow Tail wine in the house ;-)...See MoreHow often do you eat ready-made meals in your home?
Comments (15)So should the oldies have a proper meal. My parents were quite vulnerable to eating a poor diet as they aged, with no one to take them in hand. I'm determined that won't happen to us. Plus, I spent a fair bit of my life in places where you ate what was available seasonally, so it was all fresh and unprocessed and had actual flavour. (Of course, in some of those places, you were desperate for anything even remotely green by the end of winter!) I also spent a good part of my life eating fruit and veggies trucked several thousand km from California or Florida to Canada. Been there, done that, never again. Eating apples that have been in cold storage for months, or tomatoes that have travelled hundreds of kilometres, or someone's idea of a 21st century version of the old TV dinner, just doesn't cut it with me. As much as possible, local produce, my own herbs, and meat from a reliable local butcher. Frozen peas, beans, even spinach and broccoli, fine, all good, along with canned tomatoes and beans. But that's where I draw the line. Life is too short to be eating mediocre food just because it's convenient....See MoreHow often do you: replace your dish sponge?
Comments (16)Never ever used sponges - And I've been a house and garden maintenance dudette for over four decades!! I have never owned a bucket and mop either ... I have a dozen or so purpose bought facecloths instead of sponges and the like (in a colour that ties in with the kitchen accent colour) The "facecloths" are used and are allowed to dry out for about two days ... then machine-washed with the bathtowels and dried outdoors. M My current "turquoisey" kitchen facecloths are still going strong after 12 years!! For pots, oven and casserole dishes, etc. I use stainless steel scourers - with a softer stainless steel flat scourer for non-stick stuff. The scourers - as well as the kitchen sink drains - get spray-sanitized with a no-smell 1or2% strength bleach after every use!...See MorePOLL: How often do you test your smoke alarm?
Comments (5)Yeah, my alarms test me too, they love to go off around 2am for no reason at all. At least the local Fire Brigade are happy to come and disconnect them for me so I can get some sleep - gives them something to do in the wee small hours. Sparky has checked and double checked and can't find a problem at all, but still they go off....See MoreLouieT
