I agree, unless its the depth of Winter, they can hang out outside with their mates . When I was young we hung out in a cafe called the Green Man which had live music. If you have a spare room, let them have that .

Susan..we live in an apartment so not much room to hang out..she's got her bedroom and that's it..when her friends come over they all snuggle up in her bed lol ..it helps that some of them have their own place so that's where they hang out..

in Summer they hang out at our beach house..

If they move into a share house they will mostly only have their bedroom to themselves anyway, so why get used to having their own wing, etc?

My advice is don't give him any automony or privacy! I have three adult sons who have moved back and forth from "home", with a growing collection of goods and chattels (including enormous amounts of Star Wars and Lego, vast DVD libraries, furniture, bikes, gym equipment, etc, etc: I kid you not!). The eldest is 42 years old and shows no signs of moving out. I want to know how to get rid of him.

Susan Redman, I gave him the smallest of the bedrooms (just a bit bigger than a cupboard) .... but he took over the other two spare bedrooms, the storage loft, the office, the garage: there's no stopping him. I could write a non-fiction tome on my experience. About now, I am thinking of leaving home myself.

I am lucky to get the agreed $150 a week "board" out of him! Seriously, he thinks I "need" him living with me. I am not old, or disabled. I have thought of contacting potential Russian and Asian brides. He needs a woman to look after him: and preferably one that bosses him around. I am too passive. I want a quiet life ..... sans children living with me. I want to renovate my house ..... and downsize ..... but I have to get him and all his stuff out first.

Capricorn08..it's your house..if it was me I'd get in an agent..put the house on the market..give him the same amount time as a landlord would 60 days and go look for a smaller place..that way there's no room for him to move in with you hehehe

since you're selling up you'd need to pack and he has to pack his stuff too ..may be the only way to get rid of him is to sell..

Capricorn, you need third parties in the mix. A real estate agent telling him to declutter, a property stylist like this one

to put deadlines in place, and to chip away at his will.

whilst he's out I'd slowly pack stuff and move it to a storage lol $150 a week can pay for storage easy lol once you have moved stuff out you can move him next lol

Capricorn - it's time to bite the bullet on this. You're doing neither yourself nor your son any favors by letting him off the hook. He's an adult and it's time he behaved like one. Give him a deadline - say 30 days - to remove all his stuff - if necessary, rent a storage unit for him for that month so he has somewhere to put it temporarily. Make it clear that anything left at the end of 30 days will be going to the tip. And to show that you're serious, start clearing out your own junk because there'll be a lot of things you'll want to get rid of or at least put in storage while the house is on the market. Get that stylist in, get the agent in, sign contracts, get the ball rolling. And stick to the deadline. It's your life and it's time you took it back.

One of our daughters was the typical 'boomerang' kid, coming home from London with the unemployed boyfriend and living upstairs for three years.

She then moved into their own home in the outer suburbs for one year then back again for two and half years. The boyfriend finished his law degree and the celebratory holiday resulted in baby Harry, so along with the dog their were four of them until their new home was finished.

No, Vy, I don't have a plan of the house but I can tell you what I have planned to do. Our home is a traditional double-fronted renovated weatherboard in the inner city, so I've more or less given him the old part of the house, which has a few small rooms, one is his bedroom, another a study and there's a small sitting room he can entertain friends in. I'm writing a story about this topic for next week - which includes some quick fixes and some permanent ideas - so stay tuned everyone!
