We have a similar problem in that we really don't like our brickwork in our 1980 built home and have the dark brown window frames. Some people just can't understand why we dislike the bricks and I thought they may grow on me. After 4 years I still can't stand them and can't wait until we can afford to render. If we had a small area like yours I would have got it done long ago. Ours is huge. Don't be tempted to bag the walls. I've seen some shockers, usually people trying to do a cheap 'flip'. As for the windows, my uncle who is a painter & decorator said that as long as the frames are cleaned well they are OK to paint conventionally. The channels will be tricky, but ours need new felts etc. anyway.

Hi Melanie yes this lovely brick colour does cause some grief for homeowners when wanting to update colour scheme without rendering.... !!!First of all I would recommend you keep the downpipes blended with the bricks rather than highlight them. Secondly I agree that charcoal grey would be two harsh against your brick colour so maybe look at a three tone colour scheme to breakdown the harshness of a dark colour against the light bricks. For example, dark on gutters and possibly on some smaller trims and mid tone on fascia and the vertical timbers.... obviously the 3rd colour is the brick colour...

To Modernise this without rendering or retiling the roof I would probably recommend to go darker with the trims. My top pick as a colour consultant would be Dulux's Domino for the trim. It will be a little bolder and create a more modern contemporary feel. You can see it pictured below as the trim. Obviously this house has painted their bricks in the shade "teahouse" however it will still look much better on your 1980s "peru" colour bricks! Hi, Depending on your budget you have a couple of options available to you for the internal brick walls and slate floors. For the internal brick walls you can either paint over the brick in a desired colour, this will reduce that brick look or you can Plasterboard sheet over them giving you a plasterboard wall which can be painted and will look like the rest of your walls. For the slate, I have to admit that in some cases I don't mind the slate, it's a natural stone which is always better than an imitation. However if you really don't like the look the easiest thing to do is put down a floating floor over the top. If all else fails get a much bigger rug which will cover most of the slate and will probably be the most cost effective solution for your floor. If you do decide to keep the slate pick a neutral tone from the slate that you can apply to the walls which will give your interior a more unified look but without all those colour variations. I suggest a warm grey that picks up some of the tones in the floor. The overall effect can look very contemporary. Hope this helps, MKG
