White is the hardest colour to choose. The same white will vary from room to room, natural light intensity changes it's look, etc.. Rather than a white how about looking at grey toned whites such as 'White Duck', pretty sure thats the colour name a client used in their modern north facing addition. An interior designer friend suggested it instead of their original intention of Natural White which would of been to sharp.

@ alchemy, I can see you've put allot of effort into your beautiful yard and pool and whist I agree that you will probably regret a deciduous tree, irrespective of it losing most of its leaves in a short period, it would be allot of work clearing that debris from your pool but I agree that you need to complete your yard with greenery. I think the ficafolia suggested by bigreader could look stunning but I have one in my yard (no pool) and the gumnuts this little tree of mine drops must be seen to be believed albeit they dont blow. A palm of course is one of the best trees due to its lack of debris and the tropical look it provides is always a winner, however, getting one fairly established would be the way as they don't grow super fast but the expense of such a tree could be quite prohibitive. I would seriously listen to advice offered by people with an outdoor pool as experience is the best teacher, so you must decide just how much work you want to give yourself over and above the normal workload simply having an outdoor pool and I'd strongly consider the suggestion Mel N offered of putting up a sun shade or sail initially and see how that works for you. Why don't you pick your cabinets first? Then get the wall colour paint matched to the cabinet. Way easier that way, and a guaranteed way to avoid the awful white clash. Vivid white is very stark.

Sandra B/LegendaryFlame/MBDesign/Girlguides: thank you for the fence endorsement. It's been oiled again since that photo, so matches more closely to front pillars. I agree that we need to paint the side room a darker colour. I think based on all these comments I'll do the protruding front panel the dark grey of the roof (MBDesign, fyi, roof is brand new) and the side room the mid range grey that the the protruding front panel is now. Remainder of house remains the white grey. CP - I know what you mean with the fence being too imposing. If I had my time again I'd make the height lower. But great idea to plant something on the street side of the fence to soften it. I'll look into that. It feels like spring is almost in the air in Sydney - so time for the nursery's :) Sandra B: I'm not sure what you mean with the bit near the front door. Do you mean painting around the window above the entry? (per photo attached above)? Thanks again everyone: certainly made my thinking clearer having this input. Just need to decide on that panel between upstairs and downstairs window now.
