Polish original timber floor or using tile/laminated floor

We ripped off the old pinky colour carpet of the ground floor and discovered the original timber floor. Some of the areas have finished timber, like the living room and the dining room. Other areas for example the hall way and kitchen have raw timber floor. The timber floor is in OK condition, but there are gaps where you can directly see through to the subfloor. If we only to polish the original timber floor, I am concern about some issues: 1. the possibility of damaging it; 2. insects can climb up from the gaps. 3. the sound of walking on empty timber floor is quite loud. We have options to put porcelain tiles on top of the timber. We think light colour and glazed tile might light up the living room a little bit, and also give it a modern look. But we also heard tiles are cold and too tough to young kids. We can also use laminate floors or engineering floor boards, but what about kitchen area? Do people use different floors for kitchen nowadays? Really need some advice. Thank you.
