Help with a North facing front block of land (rear South)
Comments (19)I personally think that it is overkill to get an architect because you think that the orientation of your home is difficult. Its not. You could be wasting money getting advice that is not required. My own home has the heart of the house - the kitchen, facing north. This is ideal because we spend a lot of time here and it is great in winter with slow cooked food in the oven, using the oven to warm the room while also getting any winter sun that is available. My best advice to anyone is to have a home with doors in it; open plan is fine for people with money who can pay for double/triple glazed windows, insulated walls etc and elaborate air conditioning systems. Most people need to think about how they can get the best out of the money that they have available and being able to close doors to keep rooms cool or warm is to me, essential to the fuel economy of the home. So your orientation to me is what is often recommended - it certainly isn't east west. Just use trees correctly to help insulate your home even further....See MoreNeed help with paint colour for bedroom
Comments (10)Hi, thanks to everyone. My son is a teenager. He finds "temple" too depressing/cold so I think I will take your advice - go with a light colour. The temple does look good against the red bedhead and the current bedlinen! Luckily, he is over the poster stage and is happy to have photos and frame prints on his walls. Sadly, the trophies still need to be on display collecting dust! I might just do the grey pebble in full strength or do you a feature wall is worth doing?...See Morefacade of north west facing house we are renovating

Paint windows and trim Whisper white, paint the top gutter against the roof charcoal and the trim under in Whisper white. Also paint the door step in charcoal. Like your house, all the different textures just need to compliment each other. I'm building mid century design now, I'm using all different textures too....See MoreNorth facing sub-urban plot
Comments (20)imo the problem with a courtyard on the east side is that a two storey courtyard could be very hot with the eastern aspect during hot weather and also stretch the house to use up too much backyard ...the basic plan i've suggested has a wide side path to create a full length narrow courtyard on the east (subject to council regs a deciduous vine covered pergola would be excellent along the east) and there's also a courtyard on the west with garage access to the back yard but also creates a good hot weather alfresco without shading the family room and kitchen... .keeping the house in a neat shape is easier to heat and cool, makes a much more economical build and the pergola, alfresco and an upstairs balcony could be optional/later additions ...make a list of what you need, how you would use each room, could the garage double as a big party room (open to the western alfesco and used as a sleepout for a crowd of visitors or a wet weather kids' playroom...what about a downstairs shower for visitors with a sofa bed in the living or study?) try and multipurpose as much as possible could you lose some of the living areas not used every day and look at the position of windows from inside out..eg in my plan you can stand at the sink and look through to the glass front door and living room to the front garden and park and also supervise the back garden with a splashback window, there's easy access.to the garage and powder room from inside and out and the simple shape of the building allows for optional extras so concentrate on the basics and plan for adding alfrescos and courtyards outside the main building..my poor 3d image shows the view towards the front door from the sink and the stairwell allows extra northern light down from upstairs...See MoreVy
