Pivot door dimensions

We are looking to have a custom pivot door made during our new Reno. Architect has suggested 1300w x 2600h - this seems massive. There would be a 600w x 2600h fixed piece of glass to the left. Does this size door seem out of proportion? It's going to be cedar - would also value ideas for materials for the door pushes. Thx

Completed painting to a home earlier this year with a pivot door, about the same size, beautiful statement piece. Cedar timber construction stained with Feast Watson "Walnut Brown" Satin finish with a large stainless rail.

We had our pivot door made by Sydney Woodworkers. They are located in Brookvale. They also supplied our handle and lock.
A large door would look very inviting. Our door is smaller (1100*2200) as we needed to fit into an existing entranceway.

You can use what basically looks like contact paper (i.e. the stuff used to cover books in primary school) to make clear glass windows look frosted. Something like this from Bunnings: http://www.bunnings.com.au/handi-home-900mm-2m-plain-frosted-decorative-window-film_p3960052 However, you may want to talk to your builder first as they may be able to replace the glass in the front door for a decent price.

While both are great options we agree with Tribbletrouble44152k7 Trek - definitely depends on your space. We personally like swing or pivot doors - easier to clean, space efficient and easy to assemble if you are doing it DIY. Alternatively you could use a glass screen and do away with the door all together if that's possible? An example is below of our DIY shower screens, which you can also pick up with door kits: Hope this helps! Let us know what you decide.

Hi Vanessa I have a couple of suggestions to give you some ideas based on the information given. Firstly a Pivot Door works very well with Louvre Side Panels. We would not recommend using a metal frame for a Pivot as they will likely fail. A Timber frame is ideal to bear the weight and looks beautiful as well. Another option to this is a Juliet style door. This has an opening panel in the door with a fixed Security screen. These doors can also be created with Louvre Blades installed into the front panel to create a Unique look allowing airflow, light and most importantly, your privacy. My Personal Preference is always a Stain to a Timber Door, but white trims do also look amazing. We would not recommend Black or really dark colors to your timber door as this can cause the wood to warp and crack which will reduce its life. The dark colours attract heat which expands the wood and causes the damage. when the black/dark colour is outside and the interior side is in cooler temperatures the heat distribution is uneven which can cause the warping. I hope I have helped you here with some ideas on how to proceed with creating your ideal entrance.

thanks yes I have they have a timber frame that surrounds there door, so on the inside when the door is closed you see the timber frame which I didn't like. I have had Stegbar come out.

Nothing wrong with the dimensions. Your Architect has divided the overall opening size well for optimal proportion and visual balance. Effectively a 2/3 - 1/3 split which is not uncommon (and door width 1/2 of overall height). The 1300 leaf width will give you 1000 clear min when open which you'll grow to love. I'd suggest a timber push to avoid anything too blingy trying to steal the spotlight from what is a great feature and functional sized door.

Certainly no problem with the sizes as it will look great. Cedar will also look fantastic.

Only issue I can see is that it's a 'custom made door'. This could potentially be very expensive to have made.

There are many companies that make standard sized pivot door systems. Hume Doors while being a mass producer of doors have a Pivot Door System. They're available in Cedar. The width's are available up to 1650 but the overall height is 2460 which is less than your 2600. These are quite expensive so a custom made item could be even more so.

Worthwhile getting costings from a company that can provide an off the shelf item then compare it to a custom made item. Keeping in mind there are various mechanism's available. Some are self closing so they use a different mechanism for that, while others use a very basic pivot hinge.

I would also have a chat with the architect and see if they have allowed enough room to fit the self close system in. If you purchase a custom made door with the self close it may not fit the space.
