Hi there Nick, looking at your photos you look like a modern hamptons family which is lovely, do you live in a warm climate. I did like the photo you posted of the open plan living and think that you are on the right track with interior colours I have marked out how I would like the first floor, I have moved the kitchen to the end wall to line up with BBQ outdoor kitchen, plumbing for this would have easy access via the garage below. The white tiles look lovely and hard wearing for the entrance foyer and Rumpus room, the stairs in timber due to the amount of traffic even continuing in up stairs foyer kitchen dining living, Carpet in bedrooms and downstairs theater. Kitchen in white but possibly Shaker style white doors these are very popular. Using existing sliding exterior doors if possible from kitchen.Dining to verandah, I think this ceiling would be best kept white to help reflect light back indoors, the tiles appear to be in good order but you might consider changing these along with new upstairs flooring Some where for a laundry shute would be handy, actually a Dumb Waiter so you could move the laundry with ease both up and down! The roof painted a soft colour, grey/white or off white, the verandah railing could be the same colour or you could do glass. Alenka, thanks for sharing those photos. How wonderful. When I moved up to the Macedon Ranges I swore I didn’t want exposed brick or wood paneling. I’d only lived in Victorian, federation or cal bungalow houses in Melbourne, though I appreciate mid century modern design. Then I fell in love with and bought the house in the photo (but hate the light fitting). Even though our family circumstances changed and we had to sell I still love the authenticity of the materials, the attention to detail and the connection all of the rooms have with the outdoors, including main bathroom and toilet. Really bad orientation though so it was cold and dark and very hard to heat in winter. Cool in summer however. Our new build will draw on some of the best aspects of this house, and will include internal recycled brick walls in some rooms for thermal mass and interest, indoor outdoor flow and courtyards, raked ceilings etc, but 8 star energy rating and oriented to take advantage of northern light. I love your house.

There is no easy answer to this as it depends on your budget, the condition of the existing slab under the carpet, and the order that you are going to approach your renovations. Have a look at one of my Secret Design Studio's Pinterest boards for inspiration such as this one:https://www.pinterest.com.au/secretdesign/aussie-mcm-interiors/ Parquetry is appropriate for the age of the house, and can be staged according to your budget and renovations, and is easy to work around existing cabinetwork. You need to carefully consider which comes first the kitchen, or the kitchen floor if you are planning to renovate the kitchen, but parquetry does give you better flexibility than a tiled finish. There are so many other options available that may suit your home so do your research, or engage a professional who specializes in mid-century homes, and don't go with anything that will date it as an early 21st century material or renovation (like polished concrete). None of my clients want to live in a museum, everybody wants 21st century conveniences, but still respect the heritage of the home. we've had a full height window in a shower overlooking a gorgeous bush view and the only concession to privacy was to install a roller blind that could be used if/when needed (for more discreet visitors and at night looking out felt a little exposed) have the two windows the same height and tiled into the reveals and consider a walk in shower with the shower grate against the outside wall although you should consult a plumber and tiler before committing to any ideas as there will be potential restrictions with drainage ..i would be inclined to have a tall narrow louvre window between the toilet and the post and same height fixed panel in the shower although the best size and shape will be decided by structural decisions and budget but a triangular fixed glass panel above both windows would look spectacular...i've also suggested moving the entry for a more generous shower space with the post enclosed, 1200 wide wall hung vanity for your exciting basin and in wall mirror doored wall cabinet to reflect the view to be seen from the loo
