Fitting a large family in a small dining room
Hello! So, we are a family of six and this is our dining room. The baby sits in the high chair and our three kids (4-7 yr olds) and us at the table. This set up had worked because we can squish around a round table better than a rectangular table. Very often we have my parents over for dinner and for the next few months my in laws are staying with us too. As you would imagine it is a tight squeeze, often with a couple people eating separately. We want to buy a new dining table but as you can see from the photos the dilemma is not only the small space (that wall is 2.4m wide) but three sides of the room are accessible - one side in the kitchen, one the living room and the other goes to the backyard. PLUS we have a baby gate leading to the living room which only opens from the CENTRE of the gate so we can't block that off. We were thinking a long rectangular table with benches that we can tuck under and push the whole thing up to the wall when's not in use. What do you think? Any other ideas or suggestions? I might add that the wall art is in the wrong place purely because there was already a nail in the wall in that spot - I can move that! Thanks in advance guys!

Comments (6)I wouldn't make any suggestions without seeing pictures , and knowing about the load bearing structures -- anything can be worked around , but if it costs $100k to get rid of the hallway , for example , it won't achieve much extra space or light IMO . One thought though -- did you consider swapping the dining with the family room -- at a quick look you may be able to open that wall at the right of the kitchen easy , by disguising existing load-bearing uprights as part of a breakfast bar , for example ? Comments (24)The dining room is only 3.3 x 3, you do not have room for a table and lounge chairs plus a walkway to outside. Again, the family room is only 3.1 metres wide. This is not enough room for a dining suite and a lounge to be a comfortable space, since again it is a thoroughfare to the terrace. Mark the size of your furniture on the floors with masking tape. Allowing for areas to pull out chairs and comfortably walk around the table, and to outside. Comments (11)Ps. My island in my current small kitchen is on lockable castors. It was made by the cabinet maker at the same time as the kitchen. On three sides the panels go to the floor and you can’t tell it moves. The front with drawers has no kick board so you have access to the castors. I don’t move it a lot but it was handy when the kids were little - I moved it totally out of the kitchen and put in a small table.
