I used the cheapest timber veneer on the market which is either a Victorian Ash Or Tasmanian Oak board, either one of these Hard woods will do the job. We butted them up against each other and then put a thin strap of the same material but in a solid timber. We then stained it with a stain called BLACK BEAN available from a painting company here in Melbourne called Kingston Paints.
