What colour should I paint my exterior?

last modified: 6 years ago

Hi all, I am in need of some serious help choosing my exterior render colour. The roof tiles will be charcoal coloured terracotta (the modern flat ones) The house is still getting worked on....but below are some photos of how it looks so far. The render colour will be between: 1. Dulux Beige Royal 2. Dulux Colorbond Dune *** Has anyone got photos they can post to me on these colours? I have bought sample pots but don't have big enough walls to paint them on, so have only painted small sections on walls...but does not do it justice! Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

@Scott, you could get it tinted 4x stronger (3x since paint already tinted once) but it won't be exactly like full tins at 400% strength. Do you have enough left to paint entire place if re-tinted? My concern would be if you ran out then needed to get a bit more made up. The tint to paint ratio would not be exactly the same. You could get them to do a read with one of the scanners though, to get a better match.

Hi all :)) so glad i went with Dulux Dune colour - House it still not rendered in Dune yet....but the top of the garage is done - So you can see the colour on the left hand side up the top on this photo below, it is in Colorbond Dune :) I love it!!

Can't wait for the rest of the house to rendered.....BUT do U think I should do the fence in 200% strength Dune? A lot of people are saying yes, but don't want it too dark.............AND THEN what colour should i do the aluminium slats in between the fence??? Surfmist like the windows? Monument like the roof tiles? or Dune like the house?? Hmmmmmmnnnn decisions decisions!

As the roof is so big...i do not want to do the same colour slats on the fence. I am actually thinking of keeping it the same as doing the colour dune for the slats!

    ANY ADVICE??????

    THANKS ALL :)

What colour should I paint the wall where my peacock will hang?

Lovely print. I had a peacock feather print and I had a colour called glacier Grey behind. Think it was Wattyl . Again like your other walls it is a greenish grey but darker. I also had my prints on a charcoal wall..loved that too. As you said the picture ties in with the chairs and now it's not necessary to add more matching colours. I'd buy a couple of sample pots and paint large pieces of cardboard. With the other walls I would consider painting them in whisper white (Dulux) a very universal colour that ties in nicely with all colours.

I love that you have gone for a zinc roof on shed and house. With zinc there is no issues with fading and mould and the matching roofs are enough to match your house and shed. Also it is timeless and leaves more options if you change your mind down the track about wall colour. Like you I am also on a country block and had the same dillema when building my home a few years back. My shed is Jasper with zinc roof and guttering. I debated for ages about painting my house shades to match jasper. Someone said to me.....don't make your house an extension of your shed!! So glad I listened. I painted our house a green similar to coloubond mangrove and went for zinc roof and guttering. Everyone went berserk about the zinc roof and guttering (and the green) when I suggested it, but it looks wonderful!.... and very quality. The brown undertones in the green and jasper brown compliment well. The house also has zinc window frames. You want your house colours to look nice next to shed and also you want the house to catch your eye sooner, but not look too matchy. My suggestion is that you go for zinc guttering on the house to match roof, and introduce a different colour to your house that has grey undertones to look nice next to the shed. Hope this helps. I'm still loving my outside colour choices. (The inside ones are a different story and Im ready to get the beushes and rollers out again.) Good luck!

Congratulations! it looks amazing! I personally would do the slats between the fence in Monument. The roof and fence are greatly removed from each other and I don't believe it would be too much Monument overall. Surfmist is too light a colour and you will regret the maintenance involved. The difference between 200% Dune and 100% Dune in some light won't be very obvious. I would paint the fence in 200% Dune and the slats in Monument. Failing that, do the slats in 100% Dune but don't expect a lot of contrast. You are doing a great job!

I really do think the fence needs a dark colour to 'anchor' it and stop it all looking too boring. I would do dune render on fence and monument slats definitely.

I think i'm gonna stick with dune slats as i don't want contrast, i'd rather it blend....maybe do fense in 200% dune and slats 100% dune ;)

Our house is Dune. We have used Jasper on the front door and roller door, with a Surf Mist colourbond roof.
The attached photo is of the back of our house. Dune is a lot lighter when painted on the render (3 coats) and it has a slight grey tone but definitely not as dark as your photos. And it doesn't throw any yellow tones
We live by the beach and wanted a modern colour that fitted with the landscape
    Hope this helps you choose.....

Looks like the Acrylic render on the outside will be getting done this week- if it doesn't rain!!!

I didn't end up going with the 200% Dune, i stuck with 100% as i thought it might be too dark....I think i may still have a couple of days to change my mind tho ? ? ?

Should i leave it at 100% or go with 200%?????

Would you consider the fence in monument to match the roof tiles? You could then have the slats in dune.....? Just another thought.....

    No way hahaha

Fair enough. I guess on a forum as Houzz you are going to get lots of opinions and everyone has different tastes. Personally I'd go for visual interest and contrast as you have a lot of render and a dominant corner streetscape and I'd consider moving away from all the same colour. Just my opinion but you seem to know what you want so go for it! Good luck with your choice
  • 7 years ago

Cheers ;) I've just never seen a different colour render on a fence to the house, think it would look a little odd and wrong

I've actually seen plenty but it obviously needs to tie into the overall colour scheme. My contemporary house is Surfmist with Monument feature panels and our fence is Monument. Looks fabulous and everybody comments on it as it ties the colour scheme together. Obviously not your taste and that's ok.

Awesome. sounds nice..but remember my whole house is acrylic render

I'm going through this very thing now we have a hardiplank home never been painted with Ceder wood sash windows which we will varnish.

I thought I'd got my external colours picked, I did chooser the colour bond Dune then I like the look of beige royal, in the colour chart from Dulux it looks quite dark which I like but the swatch is very light so confusing The roof is zinkalume which we will keep as is.

below is the colours I'm looking at, first is Beig Royal, second Miller Mood , third is colour bond Dune and last is part of our house.

Help and ideas greatly appreciated thanks

Hi Bernadette or anybody else with advice on Dune colour, I am currently repainting my house and read all these comments and saw your house and looks very nice. I am struggling with whether I choose 100% Colorbond Dune Vs Half strength Colorbond Dune. I thought the 100% may be too dark but it looks good on your house. My roof and gutters will be Monument. And my eaves and feshia surf mist. And garage door star white British paints as they have used that colour in one of their brochures on a house with Dune and looked good and contrasts well. I'm just not sure if I should do half or full strength dune and need to decide by tomorrow! With the fence, should I do darker dune, will doing the same be too much of the same colour? Thanks so much.

Hey Vickykap....If I were you, i'd stick with the 100% Dune - because it's actually really light in colour, and I think if you go half strength, it won't look as nice and true to the 'Dune' colour. I bought the half, quarter and full strength...and found the full 100% strength was the best. Especially when the sun hits it, the colour looks amazing :) But in saying that, my house is fully acrylic rendered with Rockcote, and has a crystal finish, which means it will last forever and i will never have to paint house again (As the paint is in the render)

With the fence, i also asked the advice here on Houzz and everyone said to do the fence double strength in 200% and my renderes also said the same thing - and i'm so glad I did. It just makes the house pop and stand out a lot more...and we get so many people commenting on the colour and how amazing it looks. My roof gutters are also Monument and my windows are Surfmist :) I will take more photos soon...I just can't wait to move in!!

Good luck with it all...and please keep me updated :)

Hi Bernadette, thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly! :) I am taking your advice and going with the 100% even though I was kind of leaning towards the 1/2 based as I did a small sample on the front of my house (of both the full and half strength and the full looked a bit too dark especially in the afternoon when its shady and sun is gone) but I guess when its all over it will have a different effect?? and all the pics people posted here on the links and your house prove the 100% looks better so that's why I'm probably going with the full strength. I will also do the fence 200%, I never would have thought of that as I thought it would be way too dark, but the pics of your house and darker fence looks really good and makes the house the pop as you say. Thank you again, I will post you pics and keep you updated :)

Hey Bernadette, I just had a thought what do you think of having a half strength Dune fence rather than dble strength (if I'm doing 100% dune on house) ? that way I'm differentiating it from the house colour, or is it too light as fence acts like boarder? Thanks so much
  • 7 years ago
    last modified: 7 years ago

I also thought of doing that too but my builder said not to as it doesn't look right and it's not the proper way to do it...I also asked a Dulux expert and they said the same thing, so I listened to them. I'm glad i did.

If you go into any Dulux shop, they have days where experts are there for you to ask questions about colours, so you should ask them for some advice, and it's free :)

But yeah,, they say the rule of thumb is that if you do the same colour fence as the house, the fence should be the darker shade

Hi Italian Girl (house is looking amazing) and Anna (love the projects you have worked on!), and other contributors to this thread,

Thank you for sharing your experience with Colorbond Dune. We are renovating a 1990's coastal home and it has a 25 year old roof which is currently appearing closest to Dune in colour - see photo of colour swatches on the roof.

We would really like to try and create a modern Australian Hamptons style home given our location and features, like the images I have attached from Pinterest.

But I can't decide the best acrylic render colour for the house and front wall (which I would like darker than the house but not too dark as the coastal conditions will make it fade quickly).

To achieve the hamptons/coastal style, I would like to have:
    - an appropriate shade of white on the gutters, fascias, double front door, trims/feature, patio beams & rafters and round poles and possibly the three roller doors (or 1/2 or 1/4 strength of render house wall colour) - can't find too many local examples of white gutters with a warm rook colour like Dune while stalking newly built homes here (heaps of surfmust roof and gutters which is nearly white) but there are a few warm roof homes with white gutters from the US - PLEASE let me know your thoughts on whitish gutters.
    - cladding inserts, windows and eaves will be painted Vivid White, and
    - I would like to use the darker render used on the front wall on the triangle feature barge boards and to cover the red header pavers.

I love Dune but don't think it would look good to have it a Dune-like colour on the roof and also on the house walls, but perhaps at 200% Dune on the front wall.
QUESTION: Do you think the white gutters will be enough to break the roof and walls if they are a similar shade?

I have looked at Dulux Powered Rock S15A2 for the house render and Dulux Stony Creek S15A4 for the front wall, triangle barge boards and header pavers, but not sure if they are a little green/cream for Dune-esk roof, but may link ok with the cream pavers.

I love 'greige' (grey/brown/beige) and white (inside is grey pebble half walls with lexicon half skirtings and architraves), and I would like it to flow if possible.

Apologies for the long post (hope you haven't nodded off!!!), but I have to make a decision in the next 24hrs as the renders are ready to do the coloured acrylic render!!!

A wonderful colour consultant recommended reckless grey render and basalt gutters with white trims, windows etc, which the sample colours looked great but just not presenting a coastal/breezy/ modern vibe, which is our preference.

I really look forward to any advice for what house and front wall render colours (plus gutters and facsia colour - not wanting 2-tone) would work best given the Dune-ish colour of our old roof, cream pavers on driveway and rear patio and verandah, and finally our beachy design features and location.

    Many many thanks in advance

Once in the driveway, the roof is very expansive / long but we are hoping the triangle features keep visitor eyes towards to front door.

Good luck Deanne! I really think you need a colour consultant on this one. Try the local Dulux specialist if you haven't already. I would hesitate to give advice on a complicated one such as this without seeing it. Thank you for your kind comments and I wish I could have been of more help, I can say white gutters would look amazing but maintenance could be an issue. I suggest a pale grey instead.
Thanks Anne and I will look at pale grey given the maintenance considerations.

I have already paid for a colour consultant who was great but the Reckless grey she suggested for the house render and basalt gutters/fascia and front wall were too grey when we had the render samples put on and while it had a modern look, it was not giving the beach/coastal feel.

I will head back into our inspirations paint store this morning to see if I can find the warm grey colours that have the most similar colour make up to Dune, and go from there.

Anne you don't happen to know the dulux colour most close in composition to Colorbond Dune so I know where to start?

Thanks again and I would love to hear from anyone who has got a dune roof and hear if they tried light coloured gutters and what render colours they have used on their walls.

Hi again, I meant that you specifically ask a specialist Dulux consultant. Was the one you saw a Dulux consultant? Unfortunately, I am not a colour specialist and I don't know the answer to your question about the nearest thing to Dune in composition however your inspirations centre should be able to help! Good luck.

Dune has more interest than beige. Am choosing it for my new kitchen cupboards, BTW. On exterior surfaces, colour will vary with the light/shade/time of year, etc. Colour tone slightly different when viewed on Colourbond roofing samples, so check these against your sample pot handiwork & remember to take it outside to get a realistic perspective.

The above photos i just posted are full strength Dune. The outside fence is double strength.....

Hi. I also am thinking of rendering my house in dune however I also have dune windows and garage with a beautiful wood front door that will hopefully stand out. Does anyone think this is too much dune? I've got dark charcoal tiles on the front porch and woodland grey roof. I love that look and hopefully will pull it off because my house is a single story extra wide home (26 metre frontage to be exact). I would love anyone's advice.

    Thanks so much
