Teensy powder room - how to modernise
Comments (36)True, if they want frou frou, then definitely go for something else, these sinks are more space design oriented and for the environmentally responsible, but not necessarily pretty. A woman using them may find it unattractive & maybe even uncomfortably odd. But personally, as a man, using a powder room full of scented candles and lace makes me feel the same way! Ha! I would've agreed with you a month ago about the wallpaper & only reason I suggested it was I recently used that exact one at a dinner party (where one of the owners was an interior designer! But maybe that means braver with risks?) I actually found instead of having the size make an impression, I was busy being wowed by the wallpaper, it WAS overwhelming, but in a pleasant way that made such an impression I remembered it for this post! Anyways, it's fun to hear everyones suggestions! cheers!...See MoreI need ideas to modernise my new house
Comments (9)Hi Guys thank you so much for your input. Yes LouieT, meals is west and dining is north. We are in Perth with scorching late afternoon sun. Julienewans, we were thinking along similar lines: changing bed 3 into laundry, use part laundry for a butlers pantry. This opens up lounge, dining and part laundry for the kitchen and living area with meals. it also gives access to both north and south side of the house. The house is on a slab and games was added later. We also consider changing meals and kitchen to a guest with bathroom / powder room. This will have an outside entrance to be accessed from the to-be pool on the northern side. New entrance between current meals and family - this allows for a wider entrance. Keeping family as a study/library / reading area (taking out the bar). Our biggest concern is how to fit a kitchen into the space that flows easily from the walk-in pantry to the lounge / dining area....See MoreHow do I modernise an old Mediterranean home?
Comments (55)Reza. As said before the lights just gotta go! If you were going to paint any timber beams I’d just do the ones in the dining room that weirdly have the downlights in them. It makes the lights less obvious. You should definitely keep the beautiful sloped timber ceiling as is. The white is ok but not as striking. I am not a fan of the shiny tiles (slip hazard?) but at least they are neutral. I love the timber floors you already have. Not sure if more timber or different tiles would be the answer. Perhaps terrazzo? I wouldn’t do a cheap option such as vinyl or fake wood as it would lower the quality of finishes in the house. Currently all looks very high end. I suggest you invest in some gorgeous Turkish or similar rugs and had neutral furniture (cream, tan etc) with simple lines. Classic but also on trend and would suit the house. Some big pots or baskets with tall palms to add some height too!...See MoreA Light-Filled Balmain Extension
Comments (7)I was born in and grew up in Balmain, in two rather dingy dark heritage houses. To this day I have to live with no window coverings, and doors and windows open. I love what is being done to a lot of them now, but still love the old dingy dark ones as they have the most character. While all these renovations are excellent, and I love them, they do spoil the "heritage" of Balmain. I found my old house at 1 Broderick Street on a real estate site, and it was unrecognisable from the inside to what it was originally. Both my grandmother and her five children, then my father and his four children lived in this house. It was originally a small house, but families were big back then, and we all fitted in comfortably. I think now it is a one bedroom house, with a large open plan living area, when once it was a three bedroom house with a small living room and kitchen, with a bathroom and laundry off the kitchen. I still remember the front door with the big beautiful glass doorknob. I hope they kept it. When my father passed away we sold his house, but not before I removed the floral plaster plates from the door handles. Sadly I had to leave all the leadlight in the house. The floral plates will go into a new house we are building now....See Moreolldroo
