New kitchen, but mistakes made

This is our new kitchen, but unfortunately I don't love it. I think the white doors are too plain (too many of them) and the handles aren't right. To replace them with a different colour would be hard because of the wine and magazine racks (those bits would need to stay white). To replace handles they would still need to be long because of screw holes, but maybe I could find thinner ones? If anyone has any thoughts they would be most appreciated. The kitchen was completed in December and every day I think about "if only". (lights will be changed later)

Comments (15)Ok are we talking architectural designer or interior designer? Architects are more about lines and form and they grumble about the interior designers but that's who they hire to do the color boards. Either way you are the client and it's your house. It may be a great color scheme for the design but if you don't like it change it. Those sample of paint are worth every penny because you need to see more than a little chip. With your asymmetrical design you have room to vary more than the usual field or base color and a contrasting trim. I'd make a tracing of the design and copy a bunch of pages of it to use as a coloring book. (yes use crayolas:-) Another shade from the same shale grey paint chip and a one more accent color would be a good bet. If you are going subtle neutral, make it 3( not 50) shades of grey and play with where you put the darks and lights. Remember sunlight and shadows will create alot of contrast for even a "pale monochrome houses. (the computer rendering doesn't give you that.) You could add a pop a smoky teal, plum or coral if you want color as bold as you design. These would just be accents or trim. If shale grey it a really light silver you could make a monochromatic scheme with blue grays and a navy blue door and trim. The tan/beige in the rendering needs a darker grey to work. I would keep my midtone color on the lower level and a lighter shade on the second level. The top part that pop out could be a bolder accent color withe rest of the upper level almost white. Lot depends on your roof and window frames and whether you want them to blend in or pop out. Comments (7)Hi Kim, the post was called 'ideas for a small kitchen' it's still on diseign dilemmas page three. Poster is hechlan. Yes, a white kicker will get as dirty as a stainless steel one. Although maybe hidden a little better. M reason for mentioning this, as stainless kickers are an early 90's thing, and will prematurely date the kitchen. I have designed kitchens for around 10 years now, and while they have a place, as in you want to tie into your stainless appliances then go for it. I would just consider your options first. The positive is that they will coordinate with an kitchen, however with a white kitchen, they may take some attention that the kitchen itself deserves. Try to create something in your kitchen unique to your layout, and that is long lasting enough to enhance your own aesthetic. Kitchens with personality usually have quirks from the owner, and this may well be one of them for you. My only reasoning is that I wouldn't want you to just do it as the cabinetmaker has been doing this for several years now. White get dirty, so does stainless, they both get mopped, and the stainless actually has a scribes surface which I know is harder to get the dirt out of. We used this in showrooms, and know from experience that flat standard laminate is far easier to clean that stainless kicker, regardless of the colour. Ask your joiner for a piece of laminate and stainless kicker, feel them for yourself. They often use HPL, high pressure laminate to make kickers, and not often LPM, low pressure melamine, as the HPL is far more durable. Comments (32). Its just way too much timber! So the floor should stay, because its harder to change. Start by definitely at least pull out the part of the kitchen with the weird enclosed fridge space. that really cramps the room. Then pull of and replace the cabinet doors and the laminate bench top. pick some amazing tiles and have your husband work his magic! Paint the walls a nice colour to really make the space look more vibrant. Get rid of those horrible blinds completely! We are doing out kitchen up and we don't have much money or skills or access to tradespersons anyway. So we are keeping it to a minimum. Do it little by little. Comments (6)Hi Complete Kitchens....Yes, I realise that 20k could get a good standard kitchen (our own one recently done was about 26k including scullery), I'm more talking about the ones that talk about doing kitchen, bathroom, painting and even moving some walls on 20k. What my point was, is its great when people like you actually give an idea of a cost of a project - it's easy to get fired up with inspiration and then get thoroughly dissapointed when reality hits! Things are expensive these days and I think for some who may not have done any renovations to their house for years, they don't really have a lot of idea of the costs involved....See More

7 years agoMaybe try removing some off them? I think it can look cool and modern..and keep some to hide some clutter...can add pops of colour inside the cupboards too for something more colourful..just a thought...good Luck!

7 years agoFirstly before changing doors/handles - put your lighting in, go for something that is not glossy or square - choose a natural product and an organic shape to add interest to the room. Have you thought about painting your ceiling a colour other than white?

7 years agoPainting the roof is an interesting idea, I had only toyed with the thought of painting the cornice. Thanks! For the lighting, another idea we had was to try and get a suspended ceiling or such made in the brown to match the breakfast bar with either led lights in it or pendants. Sort of like the below.

7 years agoMy suggestion would be to keep the existing Joinery as is, update the handles to a matt black finish, replace the stools to a black contemporary style, possible changing the kitchen mixer to match the handles and placing an oversized light feature or cluster of pendants in the middle of the space, where the existing light is.
These changes will give the interior a monochrome style, and blend the existing features incredibly beautifully.
