With acquaintances, yes. I would not want to risk my friendships, or discover their private business while I was doing my due diligence. Keep business and pleasure separate.

My friends are very nice. But financial things can go wrong, and living with people daily can sour. Plus I don't want to know everything about my friends, some mystery in relationships is good.

I would never BUILD with friends - its stressful enough without including others in all the those minute decisions. I once would happily have said I'd buy an existing home with a like minded friend and some of us did idly talk about buying land together on which we would build shared kitchen and living areas, then each couple have their own 'retreat' space etc. And then I met someone who had bought a place with a friend - big investment, he and partner lived in it, the friend and his new wife holidayed there, financial arrangement reflected this. Then his friends wife developed a gambling addiction .... and it was all over, both the dream home and the friendship. You never know what is coming around the corner and always have to be prepared to let it all go - hard enough when it is only yourself to blame.

Yes I have bought a liveaboard boat with single friends before but wouldn't do it again!

In our twenties, 3 of us had equal shares in a boat. It worked great for 3 years as we were all avid sailors and spent nearly every weekend cruising and entertaining others. Guess there were few disputes as boat maintenance was a necessary grind and there wasn't much you could decorate.

It started falling apart when we got into serious relationships and space was a constraint or people had less time to devote to upkeep. Fun as it turned out to be, Wouldn't do it again with a house where much higher financial investment m, get out process and stage of life are factors.

Unequivocally NO!! Been there and it didn't work out! the hard part comes when you need to sell your share ( for whatever reason) and you discover that it is not as easy as you expected it to be. Don't do it!!

I do know two couples that did purchase a home together. They were siblings and their spouses. It worked well and after a few years one couple bought out the other. And they are still friends.

No - can't stand living with friends let alone buying a house with them. Maybe if it was with family, but not if we were locked into living together. It's easier to be nice when you don't have to work out who ate your cheerios and didn't take out the rubbish.
