Need help deciding what to do with front door
We have an 80s colonial style house being renovated (inside and back entertainment area). However, we've decided it'd be crazy not to at least change our front door and patio tiles so we have a nice entryway. But we just can't agree on what would work to replace existing door/side lights!! Our builder has said the cheapest way to modernise would be to swap out our front door, and he'll knock out the existing side lights and swap with a single plain or frosted glass panel both sides, without altering the frame. He can do this for a few hours labour + cost of door + few hundred for glazing.
However a large door company said we were crazy not to spend the money on replacing with double timber doors, which they could do for $2700 - they say people don't do side lights any more. Our tiler told us we were crazy not to buy a really big modern timber door and have one side light.
We can't even decide whether to go timber or paint the front door/s a dark colour that'll work with bricks and rear of home. Frankly I'm ready to go with whatever majority responses tell us just so we've got a decision made before the tiler needs to do our patio! (which by the way will be a honed/filled light travertine to match our backyard travertine pavers).
Please HELP. I've seen 80's facades with modern doors that work and that don't work - we need a better eye than ours.

Comments (43)Hi Tina, thanks for posting, it is all looking great. Shame about the panelling, but sometimes these things happen for a reason. It is great the armoire matches the doors so well when they are all on one wall, but I don't think you need to have the bed and side tables matching, especially when they are on another wall. My issue with painting furniture, while I love it, is the maintenance. It does chip over time and becomes one more thing to paint. I don't know what the timber is in your furniture but another possible option, especially to give you the coastal vibe is to lime it. To do this successfully, you will need to sand all the existing stain off it and go back to the raw timber. The darker the original timber, the less limed look you will get so bear that in mind too. I did an old bunk bed up that had seen better days, for my grands bedroom. It was a dark red wood, but with 4 coats of stain I got the look I was after which was that driftwood/coastal look. The whole thing looks totally new again. Sorry I can't post a photo as this function no longer works for me. Have a look at the Feast Watson range of liming stains, they have some gorgeous soft colours as well, but they let the timber show through rather than having the solid painted look. The direction the door is sliding looks correct to me; however it looks like its drawn as a 3 panel slider with incorrect sized door leafs for an opening of that size. Comments (13)I have just had another look at your floor plan and hopefully give you a better family room and flow, using the 4th bedroom is just too small unless you were to spend the money to make it the same width as the family room would be a mistake. . I know you mentioned through breeze, you should get that with the current window next to the 4th bedroom and by using the sliding door that is already installed in what was bedroom 2 this would also add breeze and light and importantly give you an overall larger spacious family room. The large 3 m x 900 island would have the sink which is one of two positioned slightly to the left so as not to be seen when viewing from the front of the house. The kitchen continues across into the old dining which allows for a servery to the alfresco and a wall of pantries on the back wall. The new dining table space allows for a long side board, IT, Kids craft with access to outside and importantly again you are able to supervise them while working in the kitchen or sitting on a lounge. The living room could be divided into two spaces if and when needed by using folding stacking doors, and again I think it's important to be able to keep that room as whole overall and not turn into two small rooms.
