20mm versus 40mm stone thickness.

I have chosen a stone that I love for my kitchen benchtops, including a large island. it's 20mm quartzite. We had planned to have it laminated around the edge for a 40mm look. The stone mason now says they're not prepared to laminate because of the 'high risk' of it cracking along the veins. So I either go with just 20mm or look for a other stone. Any input is welcome!! Is 20mm too thin on an island of 1300mm x 2300mm? The first picture is our quartzite slab. Second picture - can anyone say what thickness the stone is?
Thanks in advance.
