Definitely start with a rug. I don't know what your style is so can't make specific rug suggestion. But, I would take advantage of this neutral palette to choose a rug with a design and colors I love, then add pillows and accessories repeating those colors. Make sure the rug is large enough to be in scale with the sofa. The sofa has pretty hard lines, you might consider a round ottoman out of fabric. Above the sofa you could do artwork in graphic black and white, or color. Don't worry about everything matching. I am a believer that artwork is chosen because you love the piece. It should stand out in the room if you made the decision to invest in something. Check out local colleges the art department has several sales during the year of student art; especially around this time of year. Once you have the rug and ottoman add some chairs for additional seating. Enjoy and have fun.

What about some of those lizards with suction caps on their feet...or frogs...although not mammals, still animals, they walk up vertical surfaces...and...just to make this light...in Charleville, Far Nth Qld. big green frogs live under the rims of toilets and.....yep, I screamed my lungs out when a couple attached themselves to my bare behind! I was the brunt of jokes at the pub for weeks! @ Luke Buckle....still copies of animal skins...what is it with people who need to have what I regard as a "trophy of the kill" on their wall or wear the skin...even if its imitation? Crocodile skin shoes? UGH. Fake Lepoard skin trim on boots...double UGH...Graphics of animal skins to stick on things? Still don't like the idea. Have a friend here at present...she likes the patterns and has a leopard skin patterned dress and a pair of boots.....I asked her what the attraction was....just the pattern, she loves animals, especially cats...but still there's this hunter thing....don't get it but each to his/her own. Glad I'm not married to a man who loves animal kill trophies..couldn't stand it. But then...I buy only leather shoes and I eat meat and love leather upholstered furniture...where do I think that comes from? MMMM Tis a puzzlement! Could never come at a real animal skin on the floor...but I like my lambswool underlay and my wooly sheepskin mat????? Double standard hypocrit? Pot calling the kettle?

Introduce natures colour other than just green. Mid toned timbers like oaks, or ash, and rattan, bamboos texture. A sisal large area rug with a ribbon edge detail, rattan furniture with lush upholstery, perhaps canvas upholstery with large green leaves like those of a monsteria leaf or frangipanis, scatter cushions of emerald green velvet and a mustard cord trim, timber lamp bases and some beaten copper! Maybe in lighting, frames, accessories or a drum coffee table. This adds luxury and light, and is rit on trend. The key pieces to consider would create a comfort zone within the living spae, include an oversized sofa for lounging, 2 rattan armchairs with feature upholstered cushions, scatter cushions tying hothead in to each other. Occasional side table, not matching pairs, perhaps, a bookcase if the room fits it, mirror the back and use it to display and store, a decorators dream. Place everything within your rugs outer edge, and dress with at least one lamp, framed prints, and some grouped interest items on your coffee table, maybe a tray loaded with a small glass bottle with a plant stem, a stack of face books or magazines, the cliche of and/or two. Position the furniture away from the walls, regardless of it being small, inapt in spite of it! Bringing things into he comfort zone creates a room within a room, and makes it feel luxe. Remember to face the armchairs to the outside either the doors or windows facing that pool, include a mirror. Soften the room with fabric, maybe a silk or faux silk curtain from a high rod, right across the entire window wall, to completely close the outside from the in at night. All a little the hotels would do.

I can't really give any advice on buying over the internet - never done it, and probably wouldn't have even if it had been available in the days I was in art-buying mode. (Now, I'm at the stage where, if something comes in, something has to go, so I don't do as much fossicking around as I used to). The point is, I like to see what it is I'm buying, face to face, so to speak. I've bought most of the art now adorning my walls (and it's pretty eclectic) from street vendors and "starving artists" markets and from small regional art shows. It's always worth having a look at local exhibits and galleries outside the big centers. You never know what you can find, and what might appeal to you. My tastes are bit eclectic, so I've also been known to buy old prints and lithographs and have them framed. Also, like Georgi, I have a lot of "non-art" things on my wall, including big copper trays from Turkey, a relief from an Indian temple door, ceramic plates picked up in Italy and Austria, a Haida wood carving from my native BC, and a woven wall hanging of a village with pigs going to market from Lesotho. As I said, eclectic. I'm a firm believer that art should be more than an item of decor, and should have meaning to the owner, whether it's something you especially like or something that has memories attached to it. I don't believe in buying things just to fill a blank space on a wall. Leave the spot bare until you find something that really speaks to you.
