I prefer your new navy rug. How about you turn the two arm chairs towards each other slightly so they are a bit more casual/cosy and fit a small round side table between them. If you are able to change window coverings, then sheer curtains like in your Manly penthouse example would help soften the lines further. Enjoy your new home!

There's nothing wrong with angular, it's the basis of some famous styles. More throw rugs would help if you're still worried.

I also like the navy rug and your sofa is gorgeous!! actually you know what it is I really like about the 2nd pic...the blinds are open and they make the space look bigger! I LUV open windows that let in lots of natural light, I'm not a fan of vertical blinds especially when they're closed, but I understand if you like them or need them, just wanted to point out what I see :)

I agree a bigger rug (and I actually prefer the shaggier one) as I think it would anchor the space with softness. I could also see a mirror above the couch to open up the space, and would the art you currently have above your couch fit on the wall above your TV? Looks like it might be too long, but if it did, that might also draw the eye around the room more as the matching colour would not just be on one wall. I also agree with having lower, round coffee table; mood lighting; chairs set at a slight angle. Good luck!

I did initially planned on having soft curtain but the place came with the blinds as a standard and i just haven't got around to it yet. Thought it shouldnt be too hard to have it replaced.

In terms of rug, i definitely think it is small, my judgement of the sizing was wrong and ended u buying a rug that was bit too small.

I do like the idea of mirror, giving the illusion of bigger space but i did not want any mirrors due to feng shui (bit superstitious), plus the piece hanging at the moment has a sentimental value to me - it is a map of Mongolia and i wanted to have something represents where i am from.

My TV broke few weeks ago and i am buying a new & bit bigger one and gonna have it mounted on the wall. But not sure if i should keep something (a stand) underneath or not. The black tv stands will need to go either way eventually.

One of the dilemma i am having is whether to go with black/dark or white/light lamp. I agree with you all with the style- overhanging with round shade.

Also whether to go with timber or white/marble-y coffee table?

Thanks for your suggestions but there is a entrance glass door to the backyard behind where the chairs are, so i feel that i need to keep the area clear. But i did like the idea of having a bit of floor shelf thingy behind the couch but i just didnt have the space.

Black or white?

I love mirrors - they bounce light around and depending upon what they're reflecting they're great to use for feng shui - if you're really worried about using mirrors - ensure that they reflect back something terrific (say such as green plants outside).

You need to review how you use plants - the ones that youve got are low - you need something that is eye height and on your furniture - to create different levels of greenery - so think about taller indoor palms, and when you get your TV wall mounted, you could use the TV unit for storage and put a plant(s) on top of it to give you different levels.

If you can replace the map for other keepsakes/accessories from Mongolia I think you'd be better off. Soft fluffy "hairy/furry" cushions will soften your lounge and refer back to traditional heritage. You could replace the map with a Mongolian style rug or traditional artwork. Utilize a strong horse statue or vase, hanging a piece of traditional costume (similar to the way Kimonos are hung) or a piece of reproduction artwork - just pick things that you love on your coffee table and other walls. You could also do shadow box frames traditional jewellery/horse stirrups/bridles for something eye catching (you can source these online or if you've got family still in Mongolia it's well worth asking them to check out markets/antique shops). The map doesn't really do your home or your background justice - Mongolia has such a rich history and culture to pick from - have some fun with it.

I think as soon as you remove the vertical blinds and replace them with curtains you'll instantly feel better - (hang them as close to the ceiling as possible - it'll make your room feel taller and the curtains themselves will bring a feeling of soft comfort) and with changing the coffee table you'll be on the right track.

I think you have a lot of things quite right in this room - just needs tweaking. Replace verticals with simple roller blinds. I like the rug - can you take it back & exchange for a larger size? Most retailers are happy to do this as they still get the sale. I think the disconnect comes from the coffee table & art. I have cobbled together a pic to show you what a change in art will do. Move map to bedroom or other area? Have also changed cushions to lumbars on chair to co-ordinate better. Move navy cushion onto lounge. Add an amazing textured leather cushion as in pic. Fabulous coffee table on Houzz which would look good. See pics below. Plants are too small. If you want a plant make it a big one!
