Here is a little more info for you...and some "light" reading. Victorian Building Act 1993 16.1 and 16.2 state that a building permit is to be issued for all works that require a permit under the Act. (see below re schedule 8 of the regs) 176.2A states that a builder cannot undertake work under a domestic building contract unless he/she is registered under the class of registration that is appropriate for the works. Victorian Building Regulations 1801 and 1802 and Schedule 8 outline building works that do not require a Building Permit. You will be surprised at how many building projects actually do require a permit. For example; if you want your front fence to be higher than 1.6m, not only will you need to lodge an application for a building permit, you also need to lodge a "report and consent" application with your local council before your permit will even be approved. Domestic Building Contracts Act 1995 Part 3 Definitions "major domestic building contract" means a domestic contract in which the contract price for the carrying out of the domestic building work is more than $5000 (or any higher amount fixed by the regulations part 2.2.11 details the limitations for receiving deposits for works. The best advice I can give is that if you are unsure about the works you are about to undertake, contact your local council building services office and ask. The Acts and regulations are a pretty tough read. lourdesmay, you will most likely find information on the SA Gov site, I assume that SA has a similar body to the Victorian Building Authority, or contact the State Branch of the Master Builders Association. I am assuming that each post would go into concrete. Personally I believe Cypress Pine would be better, but why paint it? Cypress ages beautifully and doesnt need repeated maintenance. Cypress has a long life, but make sure it is the real product as it can be hard to source.

Update. I now have a very happy and content cat who has independent access to a side garden which already had secure, dog-proof fencing. I found CatWorks in the Mornington Peninsula who were prepared to travel an hour to custom design and install a cat-proof roof. It does not look like a prison but actually enhances the veranda which was installed a couple of years ago. The veranda has black, powder-coated, aluminium balustrades and the fine, black, roof netting and black, metal frame complements the veranda with its forest backdrop. Amazing! CatWorks even created viewing posts/ladder on the central, supportive post and a massive climbing rope. The dog took a while getting used to the idea that the cat was going to be using his garden, too, but now they can both come and go in and out of the house. Added bonus: I have a shed in that garden where I do pottery and ceramics and I no longer limit my visits there as I no longer need to ensure all doors are securely closed behind me or isolate myself. We all come and go as we like. Freedom!

For me now, fence services are irrelevant because I installed a new fence in my house 2 years ago. When I built a fence, I did not skimp on materials, as I believe it is better to do qualitatively rather than remake it a year later. For the material for the posts, I chose concrete, as concrete is very durable and resistant to external factors.
