Petapea, art or rug should be first, ideally, then furniture and furnishings. Having said that, the rug should fit the seating combo. Paint should be last, because there are infinite paint colours.

Hi Tracey, I love tone on tone with furniture carpets and walls - it gives you a base you can do so much more with - I am also a huge fan of cushions, lamps and accessories.

You've got the basis of a great area already but your rug might be a bit smaller than the ideal - you can fix this by layering rugs or adding other rugs (sheepskin rugs will add area, texture and work in your colour pallet if you like them, and they'll also add an organic shape to a room that's quiet geometrical.

Your wall art, sofa cushions and accessories will bring your room together and make it feel grounded. I note that you've got a small patch of warm colour in your artwork that will work-in with your reddish dining chairs - use a warmer tone in cushions and accessories to create a cohesive look and then use small hints of the darker colour in your wall art as accents. As general guide (though that's not to say you can't have a million colours if that's what makes you happy) use three colours in an area - the main one (your walls, floors, rugs and sofa) and two accent colours - out of the two accent colours one should provide hints while the other accent provides more visual quantity and unites the room - the reason for this is that the least used colour pops your other pieces and breaks up the eye while the colour that is the second most used brings unity.

Greenery will also unite a space and actually doesn't end up coming into the colour pallet guide as vegetation can be viewed as a neutral.

You might find that your lamp shades need to be a little darker to create a cosy/moodier ambience but leave this till last as once you've got your other stuff in place.

Have you considered buying tablecloths to use as sofa throws - there are so many really colourful bright ones out there. I have attached a photo of my very tired sofa that I covered with a white loose cover and Marrimekko tablecloth. They really brighten up the room.

Tracey's sofas are lovely, and they look brand new, I think she is looking at styling the area. I really like the thought of some turquoise cushions and a floor rug with some colour ( not too much) very lovely furniture

What are the dimensions of your lounge? Also what is the length of the two walls of that room?

And the depth & length of your lounges?

Your rug size is wrong, need to be much bigger.

Try to connect the surrounding with the rug, ie use surrounding color in the rug, esp. the artwork on the wall.

Hi How about this rug from Bayliss. Would be servicable. I have cobbled together a pic using the cushions, throw & painting you indicated that you like. Tip - use feather inserts in your cushions otherwise they will always slide off the leather! Also if you can afford it buy a wool rug - others tend to slide & walk on their own! Also have you considered an alternative room layout to open up the room? Not sure if your lounges would fit but might be worth a try. Nothing ventured nothing gained.

Since another posting I have done a lot of reading about feathers and the live harvesting techniques, it cruel and barbaric.. Take care to source ethically harvested feathers from meat birds rather than the live practice of feathers coming from China, it will make you sick to your stomach

I also worry a little about bird flu.
