not a fan of stones/bricks in the kitchen as splash backs ..too hard to clean..

i do like tiles though and lots of beautiful ones around that's rustic if that's the look you're going for..

Go for it! Try a good sealer, and if it does not work or you don't like it, you can always cover it over.

Yes, you would have to get tempered glass, and seal it all around to stop insects from getting trapped behind the glass.

It could look fantastic, but it would be a bear to clean. You'd have to find a way of filling the surface with a clear resin/product of some sort the bring to make cleaning easier but that in itself is problematic as you then have fire safety issues. The option of glass over brick is a good one - you could also have the image of the brick you like digitally printed onto a glass splashback and get the best of everything. Your other option is to have a sealed brick backsplash everywhere but behind the cooktop and elect to either do glass or stainless steel there depending upon your look.

There are a lot of options in brick look tiles at the moment. If they are a glazed porcelain product they will not stain and are very easy to wipe down and clean. Hope this helps :)

The purpose of a splashback is to be easy clean, it's in the very name, so alternative surfaces need the functionality to be addressed.
