Basic rules should always be considered when making these types of decision. North facing windows are the preferred option for passive solar design. Yes you may need to adjust a few things but if you can place your glazing to the north it is best. A vanity and mirror should always face the entrance to the room. That's why it's called a vanity, because it appeals to your vanity, makes the room feel bigger and presents much better than a toilet or shower. Mirrors should have artificial lighting at eye /face level so the light reflects off your face into the mirror and back into your eyes. High level lighting gives you a Herman Munster look around the eyes etc. Daniel Lindahl has done well with the placement of the vanity and mirror. Could you move Danniels vanity forward 1.0 m and tuck the WC and a shower back to back in behind the vanity. It might be tight but it would hide the shower and toilet. We have done this in larger ensuites and it works very well. You will need a minimum of 3.3m to achieve this.

Hello oklouise I am sorry not to be able to respond more promptly I have been uber busy. Wow I love the plan for the bathroom - thank you!!! But I am really going to have to wait on my master suite and change a few things as I have spoken to a Renovator Friend who has made me aware my budget is a problem.. to the point I am giving the existing house AS IS to my in-law and just focusing on the extension for my family. :-/ for now? Always wanted a Master Suite!!!! The bedroom will have to be my office for now and I will out a door in what would be my future bathroom. (Insert crying emoji) Reno Friend has suggested get rid of wall separating mud room/ stairs area. She suggests flip entrance to stairs to closer to door (thereby giving opportunity for full windows over west entrance door allowing western sun. Full height wall where stairs end and slider door there to the middle living/dining wall she suggests we keep. Effectively divides the space into 1/3-2/3. I will need a kitchen in my laundry now as I can't access toilet in extension. Upstairs study will now be my bedroom - so area over void will become my wardrobe. Reno Friend vetoed the fireplace under stairs and said it has to be on western external wall. All these ideas she has a budget reason for implementing .. so. My Feng Shui lady will be despairing. I am quite deflated but the budget is what it is, it's going to be a few years to finish I guess. Thank you and instead I am sending a virtual feast of your inclination!!! Xx

Hi Badobbs, you could easily choose a very dark charcoal or black tile for the floor and then white tile for the walls. It depends on the style you want. All one colour is elegant and a bit like a hotel (especially in a faux marble) whilst a black floor is a little edgier. It then depends on the vanity and tapware. If you choose monochromatic or black and white, then choose a wood grain vanity to add a feeling of warmth. I'd add gold or copper or brushed nickel tapware depending on the vibe you want to create. Philip it is hard to tell the difference between the two tiles, but the top one looks better due to more subtle pattern. If you darkened an IKEA timber vanity, how did you do it?
