Frosted glass doors on bath & laundry - yay or nay?

We are preparing for some internal renovations, which will involve new doors for the main bathroom and laundry. They each have windows on the north side of the house and open into a central hall with staircase which has no other natural light source.
We're contemplating either a new sky light in the hall /stair area or possibly putting frosted glass doors on the bath and laundry, which would allow the light from the north side into the centre of the house.
Design wise the house is a pretty typical late 1980s - other internal doors are just plain.
Would it look odd to have 2 random glass doors? Would even a frosted door on the bath be a no-no?
Pics give an idea of the light difference of current doors closed versus open. Note the stairs down here are being closed over - the laundry is being extended into that space.

Comments (33)Once again, thanks everyone for your thoughts. The idea of a skylight is definitely on the cards - the glass doors are something that we just like on all the other doors, with the toilet just being the question. Also, a skylight might be a bit beyond our DIY (sky-tube maybe less so?) and trade work down here takes time (I'm not just in Snowy Mountains rural, but then down a country road 25km, plus another 2km of uphill dirt driveway, and the trades don't always show willing) - things we can't do ourselves take time and frustration. What Maguire Architects says about heat loss is important to us though (thus the double-glazing, storage heaters, etc.), so I've particularly taken that on-board. As for IKEA (jajlynn, Belinda)... jajlynn, that kitchen looks fantastic. I love those overhead lights - they really suit the style. Brisbane IKEA did delivery to Sunshine Coast, but the cost was pretty exorbitant, and they wanted to charge that each time more of the ordered stock came in. It got so frustrating having an incomplete kitchen, waiting for stock, we eventually brow-beat them into sending the stuff from a Sydney store (something they were very unwilling to do, even transfers between stores). They sent whole cupboards by Australia Post, slathered in standard stamps - it was weird. But it got done, and it got put together. Before and afters below Belinda, I'll be honest with you: as much as the IKEA kitchen is better than the Mitre10 kitchen, instruction-wise, you're gonna swear. You're gonna have to paint over the blue when you're done. ;) Just remember, when you're swearing, and probably at each other (assuming there's an other here - otherwise, at yourself and everything else), but it's just a kitchen - you'll get it done, it'll look great, you'll be justly proud and you'll want to do your next one (maybe not straight away though ;) ). That's why we're doing stuff here straight away in the new house - it gave us confidence to do it or learn trying. Now if you'll all excuse me I've got to get back to swearing at pantry wall cabinets, at my partner, at Mitre10, at the government, at that thing over there whatever it is, and at cursed fate that placed these suddenly-discovered slightly-wonky walls between me and happiness. ;)...See MoreAdvice on combined bath/laundry plan
Comments (8)aiming to avoid problems with the window or expensive alterations my suggestion includes a frosted glass sliding door instead of a dividing wall (with or without an extra panel of glass to fill in up to ceiling height)...a simple shower screen would be the thinnest and easiest to install and allow space for a freestanding small vanity with medicine cabinet and the biggest sink for dual purpose laundry and personal use and a combo washer dryer and overhead cabinet under the stairs behind the bathroom door with just enough space to squeeze in an ironing board, broom or vacuum...there's no obvious advantage to stealing space off the ensuite and many will say it's always best to live in the house for a while before changing too much...See MoreFloorplan change - old 3 bed, 1 bath, no laundry house
Comments (15)Might be helpful if I talk through the parts we like and dislike with the existing rooms: - Lounge: gorgeous old fireplace and morning sun through the windows, great natural light. We spend a lot of time here - Dining: no windows and existing walls block off indirect light from the other rooms, thus why we thought it would be great to knock down some of those internal walls. If that becomes too difficult we'll need to at least do a skylight - Family: my least favourite room, mostly due to the coldness. As mentioned before, its really just being used as storage atm and long term plan is to replace it with something warmer/better constructed - Kitchen: pretty pokey, would love for it to be open with the living, dining and outdoor areas. Great view right onto the backyard from the current kitchen sink windows - Bed 1: gorgeous morning light, pretty happy - Bed 2: gorgeous afternoon light, not really used atm - Bed 3: pretty small, ok natural light. We're using it as a study currently - Bathroom: pretty old and feels abit cramped (that may just be the layout), but doesn't bug us as much for some reason, so happy to leave for later - Backyard: Flat. Very leafy and overgrown. 2 or 3 massive trees, but otherwise mostly shrubs and weeds. We're aiming to tame the weeds, plant some veggies and fruit trees and keep a few chickens for a permaculture/food forest kind of feel :) @oklouise - the block is about 16 m wide and 45 m long. From the front bedroom wall to the front fence is about 10m. From the "Family" room wall to the side fence is about 2.7m. We're in Sydney in quite a leafy suburb so I guess moderate/warm climate? And yes, we are looking into what we can do with the trees with council @Kate - thanks, we had actually thought about rotating the house initially but it turns out with the current orientation, the windows in the Lounge Room and Bedroom 1 get gorgeous morning sun, so definitely keen to keep that. We're doing laundry at the moment in the outdoor shed, which is fully plumbed and yes, existing bathroom is quite old but not bothering us too much at the moment. 7 years agoI love the use of frosted glass doors and the extra light they can steal from another room.
They can make a statement if the frames are stained in a dark colour or given a cleaner look if painted white to match the other doors, skirts and architraves.
Frosted glass doors can alleviate the need to turn on lights during the day in a dark room and stylishly hide the mess of a laundry.
Make sure they are made with safety glass.
