At some point in time, something similar was done at our place off the master bedroom and the space currently has wardrobes and door to outside. The main concern we have with our space is that little/no consideration was given to insulating the area. We are hoping to demolish and rebuild a proper extension in the future. Was it your intention to remove the current external wall/door or were you thinking to keep it more of a separate sunroom/retreat accessed from the bedroom?

You'll still need council approval wether you're reusing existing structure or not.

Its not a big issue getting approval. Have plans drawn, submit them to council, application gets passed. Its straight forward stuff that gets done daily. It does mean that the works will need to comply with current building codes for it to pass which is actually a good thing..... It reduces dodgy unsafe construction works, among many other issues that can affect your biggest investment.

Usually you don't need an approval if you're only building a pergola well depends on how big it is ..and how easy going your council is..

we had to ask for permit to put our louvres in..our council is a pain in the backside..one of the more difficult ones..

As soon as you enclose the pergola..or starting to knock down external walls you'd need to get it through to council..

It's a pain but it will look much better..not look like a shonky add on..

Having gone thru it recently myself, our council, only allows for a home owner to build a structure, no more than 1m off the ground, having no side longer than 5m, total size no more than 10m2, WITHOUT a roof, without needing approval, so I would check just to cover yourself, even a Bali hut with a grass roof is only allowable if it has no suspended or raised floor, without approval. Whether your council would allow you, without approval, to close in what you currently have? you need to check, otherwise I like your ideas, seems your french doors and stained glass feature window would work well with the rest of your home. Hopefully you'll come out with a very nice result. But please, first consult your Council, making sure you meet with a person who routinely deals with this kind of extension/construction work. Don't believe tradies who tell you that you won't need a Council permit. Input from a number of professionals may be required, including civil engineers, so make sure your budget is adequate. Expect permissions and work to take longer than you're initially told they will. I'm speaking from personal experience, having made lots of mistakes when I decided to get a simple deck improved.
