Polished concrete floors

Hi - has anyone out in a polished concrete floor recently? We are doing an extension and looking to use polished concrete in the main kitchen living area. We will be using a suspended slab. I have a few questions I am struggling to get answers to.
1. Can you recommend anyone
2. Does the mix have to go into the slab or does it go on top of it?
3. If the polished mix goes on top of the slab how do the two work together and not crack
4. How do you match levels with bathroom tiles etc?
5. Is it slippery when wet
6. What are rough costs for the mix and the polishing

Any other information based on your feedback would be great.

Like most things there are more than one way of achieving a similar outcome.

2. & 3. An existing slab can be polished or a screed of concrete can be laid and polished (over an existing slab). Both are acceptable. Concrete can/does crack hence they add expansion/control joints and suchlike to control the cracking.

4. is tricky to answer without being on site as there is too many variables.

5. More than likely to be slippery as it's a 'polished' surface. Even outdoor tiles with a course surface can be slippery.

6. Polishing is time consuming. The machinery is that grinds the surface is expensive. It is quite popular so theres a few companies doing it so shop around and look at the different options.

Polished concrete looks great but you won't really know the outcome until actually completely ground and sealed. Have a look on YouTube too see how it's done.

we had our slab polished only in the kitchen ..

if I had to do it again I wouldn't have polish concrete in the kitchen ..reason is it's hard on your legs if you have to stand for hours prepping ..

my next buy.. a support mat for my kitchen which wouldn't look too great but will be kinder to my legs

I agree with mfwolfe it is a definite slip hazzard ( if it must be concrete have the installer add silca to the final coat of sealer) to add slip resistance but you should consider cork tile as a alternative lots of colors, naturally warm underfoot, good in wet spaces ( not in shower of course) check out sites like ( Expanko) cork floors, some neat stuff available - shower floor done in small mosaic tile will minimize slipping and take any settling in slab in stride

Have you heard of quartz carpet? It is a composite of quartz aggregate and resin, uv resistant no fade, soft underfoot, seamless indoors or outdoor use and can be installed over existing concrete floor, ply etc so evening a miss matched floor is easy. Mid century have some stunning leftovers like large elongated space, timber detailing and panelling and innovative material application for their time. When we restore them today often in respect to them we more often upgrade these innovAtions while still feeling at home. Remember cork floors, they felt great, insulated well and laid easily, but look outdated now, Quartz carpet has that same feel, but much sexier! evolution surfaces website can help. Hi, I'm building a home with polished concrete throughout. I've noticed this post is a month old, so have you decided yet? I didnt' go with the usual aggregate as I felt it was too "busy". The concrete had charcoal dye added to the mix. I've seen pictures of it done with light colours as well and it looks good.

With a level issue like that- you are either going to need to grind it right down by 30mm (all good if you want aggregate exposed, but tricky if you don't know how thick the original slab is), or lay a topping slab on top of what you already have. These topping slabs can be like Pangea (thinner 5-6mm) or thicker regular concrete (40-50mm). The regular concrete is cheaper and you pay by the cube (m3). You then need to pay to have it ground and polished....anything from $50-70m2. Polished concrete is not a cheap option. You might want to look at concrete-look tiles, that way your tiler can make the level adjustments.
