What width should our nib walls be to have a balanced bookshelf

We are building an intergrated cabinet and bookshelf into the corner of our family room. Some friends told us that to make sure that the nib walls on either end were the correct widths. Apparently the nib wall that is against the wall should be wider than the one in the middle of the room because otherwise they will look uneven (one in the middle of the room will appear wider). They said that there was a ratio but they couldn't remember what it was. Has anybody heard this or know what the ratio is? Our timeframe is quite short, we have our builder for a few hours tomorrow and then he is busy for the next few weeks so it is tomorrow or never. Thanks in advance
