We need a fast growing, low maintenance hedge to provide privacy around our pool. We prefer it not to be too wide so as to maximise the space in the backyard. Any ideas would be very much appreciated
How much height do you need? Everything is going to need some maintenance. Lots of people use bamboo. I'd probably go with a pleached version of something that grows well in your area underplanted with Lomandra.

Hey there Brie M! You could give Bamboo or Little Gem Magnolia - these plants will grow quickly with little maintenance. Non-flowering plants will prevent too much debris falling into the pool, too, which saves clean up time.
In the meantime, have you considered DIY shade sails? They're great for immediate privacy and UV coverage while the plants grow in, and can be purchased in various colours and sizes from Bunnings. I've included some examples below:
