Size Matching Bathrom Wall and Floor Tiles?

Renovating the bathroom, we would like to use a 300mm x 300mm dark charcoal floor tile. Does this mean we should use a 300mm x 100mm white subway tile on the wall or can we use a 400mm x 100mm white wall tile? Our current bathroom has a 400x100 white wall tile and the previous owners used a 200mm x 200mm floor tile. It is a fairly small and simple bathroom. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Size of tile also depends on what shower floor you are having. Is it curbless walk-in? If so, large format tiles on the shower floor won't allow for the correct drainage. Also, be careful to prepare the floor really well using a professional experienced with laying large floor tiles. They must have proper structural support and an absolutely flat base that won't move.

i think what size tiles you put on the wall with those floor tiles comes down to your personal taste. If you have any photos of what you like, put them up.

As Tribbletrouble says, larger tiles are more of a challenge and requires all the prep work to be really well done. As far as the aesthetics of the size tiles - it is a personal choice and the manner in which you're going to use the wall tiles - if you're going to do a stacked on top of each other style, look at the same width tile, if you're going to go for a brickwork style or on an angle than either one can work. The best way to see is to lay them out at the tile shop - the tile shop guys are used to this sort of thing happening and will be able to give you some added insight. Good luck.

Your tile will co-ordinate beautifully with the timber if you can pick one of the darker colours out of the timber and select a tile in this family of colour. The trick to making a colour concept work is to either co-ordinate or contrast. If your timber is as busy with grain and colour as the image you've shown, then maybe co-coordinating is the best way to go. Never chose materials independently of each other - always take a tile sample home to see in the natural light, next to the timber. I hope it all works out the way you envisage it. Cheers, Michelle

It can either look really dramatic or too dark, depending on the size of the room as well as your other components. I've attached a couple of images of our work using dark tiles, the smaller bathroom we have surrounded the bath with dark tiles but then balance it with an extra large mirror to bounce the light around the room. The larger bathroom we have taken the floor colour way onto the wall but used a different texture on the walls for drama. Hopefully this gives you more of an idea but you shouldn't to nervous of the room being dark, it's where you can create a contrast as well as textures. HI there! If your looking to save money, then perhaps look into a stainless steel or ceramic walk in shower tray instead? This negates the need for waterproofing / screening / membrane etc and they can look really awesome! Some top architects are using stainless steel trays with timbers and dark tiles and it looks amazing!! Your bathroom looks great with your current tiles on the floor and the beautiful timber joinery frames so I think stainless steel would work in really well with this. If you want to do a proper walk in tiled bathroom, perhaps talk to Warm Up. They do fully tiled walk in showers as well. (not just underfloor heating) and are pretty well priced for what they do. Hi jgjustingordon63! Good luck with your reno - it can be exciting and scarey doing a reno!

Have you considered doing subways a bit differently such as the pic below (I found via Pinterest)? This way, it doesn't matter really the size.

Check with your builder/tiler re the fall if you want large-ish tiles for the floor. If it's a small bathroom, this might be an issue. In the pic above they've gone with small tiles which also looks really lovely.

One other point I would make from experience...We used charcoal floor tiles AND grout. Bleach can discolour the grout, so you just need to be aware of that. There are ways around it and you can re-grout down the track (at an expense) but just giving you the heads up here!
