Timber or white shelves for my new kitchen?
Comments (14)I would have your bench top supplier cut a thin batten of timber in the same 40mm thickness, and fix this as a front to a white melamine shelf. For a couple of reasons. Melamine is easiest to keep clean, whereas a varnish or oiled timber will require constant maintenance and resealing if it is used often, it will discolour and even with the sealant it does not like moisture, being natural, all timbers expand and contract in temp changes. Melamine is stable, and won't be seen from the viewpoint, and the timber front will make it look more substantial. Secondly, this thickness will be necessary to avoid shelf deflection, where lengths over 900mm will commonly sag under weight. Reinforcing your shelf with timber battens will avoid this, and the timber edge strip again hides it. If all this seems a little too hard, just invest in solid timber shelves of around 40mm, but have the tops laminated....See MoreMatt Black, Timber or White Ceiling Fans??
Comments (5)Hi, I had gorgeous black fans in my last house. Had the bifolds and all open living. Only get black if you plan on cleaning them well very frequently, as dust and dirt really shows. Switched to white in my new place and yes they still get dirty but the dust seems to not show as much. I also had a a black fan in the kitchen with a black fridge and it looked superb. I had exposed laminate beams in the cathedral ceilings and brush box floors. A few little black pieces here and there made them really pop :)...See MoreUpdating my timber kitchen
Comments (44)yvonne.. re sanding cupboards I had mine professionally sanded because they were looking worn. timber is American Oak and it really didn't lighten very much by sanding. so depending on your timber you might not achieve much. i would change a few upper cabinets with glass doors, white perspex or remove a few doors, paint the back of shelving and hang wine glasses or whetever and break the load that way. I replaced my range hood with a pull out chrome one and that in itself made a difference nt tying in with the chrome handles. see pictures. maybe you could paint the legs or reupholster the stools to white...all part of the kitchen....See Moreblack stained timber cladding ..hot or not
Comments (5)The fading black I have seen has been on manufactured plywood type cladding. It does not look good as looks uneven and patchy. When building we changed from the cheaper cladding to solid recycled hardwood shiplap. So glad we did, as it is now greying off beautifully....See Morecathlizross
