Australians call some household things by different names
Comments (691)Air condition is called aircon, the combo air conditioner & heaters that you hang high on a wall are called swingers. Countertops are called benches, yards are called a gardens, closets-wardrobe, bonus room-rumpus room, hardwood floors or any wood is called timber. Living in the country is living in the Bush. Carpenters are called a Chippy, electrician -Sparky, brick layer-bricky, plumber-dunny driver. Downtown is called CBD. Neighbor is spelled neighbour. If a room is painted and decorated in updated colors & pattens they are called “Fresh”. If a house is updated in higher end-sophisticated materials it’s called “smart”. Fittings-are basically light fixtures, plumbing fixtures, appliances. Color is spelled colour. Picture rails are still pretty common. Comments (79)Oh C'mon V Richards...every epoch has its treasures. B4 you make a mad run for it stop a while and consider the period and the reasons for the style...it can be extremely enlightening....unless its not the period you want to escape from but from some of the opinions. I spent many years of my youth outside of Australia living surrounded by old ruins in Europe. I forgot what it was like here. When finally I returned to Australia and found myself living in some of the 60s and 70s places..I found much to admire and wonder about. I may not have fallen in love with much of it but there was a certain mistique and a feel that I can still conjure when talking about certain places. Not saying that it was all romantic and pleasant but it conveyed something of the era and the kind of Aussie from those days....See MoreOklouise...doable ?
Comments (30)don't be in too much of a rush to change anything including the trees...a simple "window" cut through shrubs can provide views while retaining privacy and shelter from wind....in a similar situation my mum used to climb up her own and neighbours' backyard trees and tie a red rag to selected branches then go back inside to test the line of sight and, by careful selection, she was open up the views with only selected branches removed (cheaper and easier as well) and why not just live in the house for a while to get the feeling for where are the best locations for your morning coffee and hubbies TV etc... so exciting and look forward to seeing all the plans and more photos, yeah!!...See MoreCLOSED: Vote & Comment to win a Sheridan Gift Pack (RRP $750)
