Fireplace surround dilemma
Comments (13)Carleenimlach your fireplace is stunning. It is infact original in bungalow detailing, and the bricks are not painted. I know this treatment very well. They had a brick stain applied, which is a red oxide painted to give the appearance of an even red brick face, this was done when tuck pointing is applied to the mortar course. I can see yours was. It looks as though it was charcoal, also another Edwardian bungalow detail, and the lines accentuate the archway. The mantel itself is absolutely beautiful. I myself would restore the brickwork, and let this period detail return to being the heart of the home. The hearth bricks definitely need to go, in their place I would lay a single slab on stone, which is a little costly, but overall, is worth the expensive you save in defacing the brickwork anyway. I suggest a rough sawn bluestone slab that will further enhance the charcoal tuck pointing, and grey is not only a current interior colour, but it is also what edwardian bungalows often featured. So you get to have a current, updated interior whilst preserving the beauty and character of a period home. This is where the homes value lies....See MoreFireplace Dilemma
Comments (5)I would check your flue is high enough to take away the smoke - it may not clear the ridge line of the roof of your house- hence the black soot line. Mine does this and my dads used to do this too until he went to the guys who he bought the wood heater from and told them bout the problem. they recommended another length of flue - which eliminated problem and so you would only need to clean and repaint wall - and get the company back to ensure enough drawing of the fireplace is happening to eliminate the smoking issue. also check you are not burning too much green wood as burning wood that is not dry enough can cause this problem as well and will save you buying a piece of wood and ruining the modern look that you wanted. - just my thoughts....See Morefireplace dilemma
Comments (6)My immediate thought was also black, it would make it look quite sleek and modern, and would suit the concrete floor methinks! Best of luck with it, would love to see the finished reno!...See MoreKitchen Design Dilemma Hampton/Country Style to suit house
Comments (6)You have a complex set of requirements that won't be adequately addressed in an online forum of opinions. In addition the photo of the style of kitchen that you like is in a much larger space than you have available, and the size of that kitchen contributes to its presence. Without borrowing some space from adjacent rooms for a wider, larger kitchen then I would consider a G-plan with the end of the G being bench height seating with half the stools with their backs to the view, and the other half with their backs to the kitchen, as in this photo. I would engage a design professional to visit, take your brief, measure up and come back to you with a few concepts for the layout. Think hard about how important the symmetry is to your kitchen as it can really hamper creative solutions that are outside the box. It is still possible to have a Hamptons style kitchen, that has presence and is of a formal nature that is asymmetrical. The rest of your home is not symmetrical, and forcing a symmetrical design into a pre-existing space only ends in compromises to the functionality. A good design professional (not necessarily a kitchen designer) will look outside the three walls that are constraining your thinking and options to create an elegant solution, but you will need to pay for this creative service.
