Put your stamp on your home
Comments (68)Okay many moons ago in my first apartment at college, I had a BF that graduated and moved, and accused me of never writing. He was coming back to visit and I got a sheet of 'space shuttle stamps' (21c fyi) and framed them and hung them where you could see them as you entered my little hole in the wall apartment. He got the clue. Homework was killing me. Yes I did know what a stamp was. Only other time I decorated with stamps was my first food stamp card and one stamp/sheet from my last allotment of them. They used to be coupons that you got in a book; and the store would make 'change' with other coupons, in that you could not get more than 99c cash change back; so my book would be bound in with what I was given for allotment, with $20, 10, 5, and 1 coupons. Having loose ones were okay but you better have the cover for a book and your card to spend them. I think I still have both somewhere. Someone asked me about the foodstamp one and I said it was a reminder about not being too proud to eat, and where I had been and I was now more successful than that (got off dole and assistance)...See MoreWhere to put a linen cupboard in a new small home
Comments (3)No one says you can't put some kind of storage in the garage. Maybe blanket boxes at the end of the beds would help ( useful seating as well). Use one of the kitchen drawers for kitchen linen. Under Bed storage for a change of linen in each room. Kids? One or two bath towels (each child with their own colour, so you know who the culprit is that left the towel on the bathroom floor...See MoreNew home: Where do we begin?
Comments (6)Congratulations - welcome to the next few years of walking around your home with a tape measure, scribbled "plans" on the back of envelopes and dreaming. Live in your home for a year before you make any changes - different times of the year will show you were you have issues and where you don't, what works and what doesn't as well as how you use your home. Once you start moving plumbing you're looking at a lot of money, your yard very possibly being torn up and then on top of all your costs if the plumbing pipes go through neighbours properties you're look at costs concerning them too. See if you can do what you want without moving waste and sewer lines. When you've lived in your home a year, and have a look-book/ideas book then consult an architect to find a way to use your space more effectively and get it costed out - the cost just might be too much. Sometimes it's cheaper to sell and buy somewhere else long term - the financial, physical and emotional challenges of dealing with a major reno like you're talking about aren't to be undertaken lightly especially when kids, pets and alternate accommodation come into play....See MoreFloorplan advice needed, where to put laundry
Comments (14)I was just thinking of making more of a substantial open living space, in terms of the extra floor space to the east, as I can see it being the part of the house that we would be in all the time. In terms of the north side, we are on a corner block and so there is a 4 metre setback on that side, which we are already at. I don't know much about these things, but I assume that wouldn't be able to be changed. I am planning a nice garden on that side of the house anyway, which I am excited about, and we like to have the space all around the house (i.e. no fences close to any of our windows, giving the feeling of privacy and space in a modest suburban block). The other thing I think of a lot is regarding passive solar design principles, and having our house oriented the way it is (West facing), I am reluctant to do anything too major unless we can really capitalise on this. Having the bedrooms on the northern side does work really well for us at the moment, as we use them a lot - with small children napping and my husbands office being on that side. Although that will change when the kids grow up... I'm hoping we can at least add some skylights or something like that into the extension area/kitchen in order to bring in more light. Our kitchen is quite dark and cold in winter....See MoreJess Jess
