Improved garden beds
Here's the before shot.
A tired, warped sleeper garden bed, It was really looking old and dilapidated and in need of a freshen up. Center stage is little miss fluffy tail who insists on putting her nose at the edge of every hole you try and dig.
Originally we wanted to do it with retaining wall bricks, but after several quotes we basically abandoned that idea all together and went with wood.
We decided to clad this garden bed with decking wood to freshen the look up a bit! The top part here is just resting in place - we still need to purchase some wider/thicker pieces to do the top capping!
As is the style, here's a little before and after.
With all that practice we got started fixing the retaining wall for our hedge.. which was some temporary sleepers resting on the ground while we decided what to do.
We cemented in some upright posts and backed it in weatherboard to stop the dirt spilling out. We pick up the remaining wood in 2 days time and should have it finished by sunday!
Heres roughly what it will look like (still no capping on the original fence)
Oh and excuse the patchy lawn, its in the process of getting fixed up :)

Garden bed — what to plant?
Comments (15)Perhaps check with your local council to see if they have a plant list. Many councils here in NSW do this to assist homeowners with choosing native Australian plants and some introduced plants that grow well and are in keeping with the area. Of course it depends on the look of your house and whether your landscaping plan will compliment that, or whether you want a manicured look, or a natural look, cottage garden look (e.g flowers and hedges) or a beachy look (e.g. if you have a pool) and so on. Fruit trees sometimes need a different aspect to other trees, so separating food trees from general foliage is something to consider. Oleanders are off the list in many parts of NSW too. We recently put a fence in similar to yours but it has been painted black as our house is modern. We've been advised on lomandra, banksia and grevilias and lili pillys for a native garden as we already have lemon scented gums and ironbarks on the property. Comments (45)Don't plant the giant bird of paradise in this small bed. Fantastic plants and have used them at our house. They will grow so big and destroy your paving. I have also used clumping bamboo and my wife hates it due to the mess it makes. Constantly dropping leave etc. Would not plant near a pool for this reason. Another negative comment. Bougainvillea should never be planted in the ground. Lovely flowers but get our of control, dangerous spines and almost impossible to kill. Keep in a pot and keep trimmed. We put Xanadus next to our pool at our holiday house. Perfect size and clean. Consider other ways to hid the fence. Perhaps some type of bamboo screening??...See MoreGarden bed ideas
Comments (2)You could plant Golden Cane palms, underplanted with Xanadu, golden cane don’t have invasive roots so safe to plant near pools and spa, if you are worried put down a root barrier but all advice sees these beautiful plants as a safe option to plant, soft foliage also....See MoreFront Facade & Garden bed Design
Comments (6)I think your ideas are good. Plant choices and paint choices good. However I would concentrate on the actual roof. That appears to be a faded roof and needs restoration. With our Perth summers I would not go a monument roof, but still something darker like Balsalt. With the roof dark, you could paint the garage door white or monument. Then all trims in monument. But be mindful of fading of paint if it is on the northern side, where it will always have sun affecting the finish. That’s why I have suggested a white garage door. Also, the brick “ rail” through the middle of the house facade. I would try and colour match with the brick colour, and paint over it. Also look at removing the gable “ sun rises” and have a white full gable with no trim....See More

We also ran an irrigation system in for the hedge, planter box and lawns at the same time.
Here's hoping the grass takes off over summer!

Thats the weatherboard screwed to the uprights
Thats a longer run showing how they sit end-to-end just screwed into the uprights.
