Front Facade - widening stairs, increasing curb appeal

Hi there, we have recently landscaped our front garden. We want to continue the travertine up the stairs onto the front landing. We want to widen the stairs to the same width as front verandah. Advice to date had been to brick up an additional wall flush with existing wall and use precast concrete stairs as a base for travertine. This leaves us with the issue of blending new to existing bricks at the front of our house. Given the brick is old and it would be difficult to match, how should we tackle the bottom brick area? Some ideas would be render, painted brick or ekodeck,. Does anyone have any colour suggestions? Any advice would be great. Ps: when stairs are complete we will replace steel posts with timber and balustrades will be glass. Any recommendations for Sydney based trades also welcome for balustrades/brickies? Picture below.

Comments (9)Thanks Emily! That's a good idea, my only concern with a metal roof is if it would be louder, i.e. when raining?. Also what colour metal would you suggest? I absolutely love glass doors and I absolutely love a good quality timber, and would love that to be a feature of the house exterior. Comments (5)it's a gorgeous house, nothing as awful as your description: think Roman mid century modern for inspiration but you must keep the breeze bricks (with an extra railing to bring it up to safe legal balcony height 865cm? and the stone panelling but the stacked bricks and the stair railings look too dainty and would be better with a solid framework to match the chunky pergola and, unless you have a gorgeous view from inside the house, consider making the front upstairs balcony railing in a solid panel (try painting the glass to trial a dark colour) and clad the whole upstairs balcony wall with the Scyon panelling but i prefer the dark (painted dark grey?) brick at the front with the very distinctive square white arch......See MoreUpdate very tired front of house and streetscape
Comments (41)Hi there, I personally don't like the look of that rock wall with your home. It does nothing for it. I would get rid of it, you may even be able to sell the rock for a bit of cash. I would besser block a retaining wall in its place with posts and render this, then use your timber horizontally slated between the posts. Select a paint colour that works nice with your timber colour and carry the colour through to your house. This will also work in with your side timber fence. Also remove all the plants in the front, just because they are lovely doesn't mean they are in the right place or serve a purpose, you may be able to transplant them somewhere else in the yard. Plants: mop tops are a great feature tree and give lots of shade in summer. A hedge along the inside of the fence would look great, Lilly pilly's are good and Japanese box is tough as boots and requires little water once up a bit. Westringia, birds of paradise, hibiscus, viburnum, Murraya all take heat, depends on what look your after. My average temps in summer are 47 degrees and winter -3 & these plants survive. Yes I also agree with a path from the front to the door. Front door to house could have some timber posts added with an awning/patio to make it stand out. The timber would carry through from the front fence. Painting the brick can also give it a lift if you don't want to go modern with render. You could also paint the concrete driveway, there are some snazzy options available for this, plain or stencil. Best of luck! Comments (13)Further to Julia and Julia's decking and planting comments I would consider tidying up the front eave. At the moment the carport and verandah look like late add-ons (which they are) due to the "stepped" gable. By extending the verandah and carport roofs forward to align with the front gable fascia, then adding a consistant fascia and eave lining across the full width of the house the side additions will look more integrated. Don't even think about a faux stone as they look fake, and you will need to continue it down the sides so it looks less tacky. I would consider just painting below the beading line a darker shade of the wall colour to anchor the base of the house. I would not widen the windows as the rythym works quite nicely, but consider increasing the height to the ceiling line to give a better proportion using awning style windows instead of poorly proportioned sliding windows. If you have ceilings that slope to match the roof line the head of each new window should be raked to follow the ceiling line. If this is the case then you will have a nice looking home with a slight mid-century modern vibe, and which may even be the best looking house in the street!
